For most Indians Thailand is the obvious choice for their first international travel. Unfortunately for me it wasn’t but I don’t regret it because I learnt from my previous international travel mistakes so when it came to planning for Thailand, I was prepared. While most think that Thailand is for solo or couple travellers, but I travelled with family (and once with friends) and it was equally thrilling!

But there are always questions that arise in the mind of first time travellers and here I have tried collating the few that are some tips that you should know before you plan your first trip to Thailand.

The Visa Process:

One of the easiest and hassle-free process across South-east Asia (although Bali and Sri Lanka are also there). The types of Visa offered to Indians are Tourist Visa (TR), Special Tourist Visa (STV), Non-immigrant Visa and Thailand Elite Visa and here you can check what all documents are required to obtain a visa.

You can also apply for Thailand Online eVisa instead of standing in the queue for Visa on Arrival

Currency:

Currency is Thai Baht (THB)

Conversion Rate: 1 INR = THB 0.42 (today’s rate, subjected to change)

Places Where You Can Convert Currency:

You might think the airport is the best place to convert currency. It’s not!! The place where you will get the best rates is the post office!

Tips on Buying Currency: A myth is to convert weaker currency into USD and then again convert from USD to local currency. Never do that!

You are buying conversion charges twice! Once while buying the USD and later for buying the local currency. Remember that the buying rate of a currency is always higher than the selling rate. Banks and financial institutions earn off those charges (which are usually very high but remain hidden).

Best Time to Visit Thailand:

The best season to visit is during the hot season that lasts from March to June and from October to March. Time of the year to avoid is their wet season (or monsoon) which is between July to October.

Modes of Transport You Should Use:

While we are used to travelling in cabs but hailing one in Thailand might turn out expensive.

Within the city the best means of transport are:

• Hire a songthaew (meaning two benches) or “red cars”, there is room for 8 people.

• Tuk-tuk

• Bus

• Minivan

• Train

• Ferry

• Longtail boat

• Motorbike

• Driving a scooter (if you have a Thai Licence or International Driving Permit)

Things to do in Thailand:

Thailand is an explorers’ paradise that offers a platter to those who come with an open mind. While some things might be a little too dark for someone’s taste, there are a lot more that can cater to a traveller’s sensibilities.

1. Island Hopping

With access to so many islands made available to the public, one should not miss the opportunity to explore them all.

2. Water Sports

With its vast aquatic magnificence, this would be a natural choice especially for scuba diving and snorkelling.

3. Temple 'Run'

Your Thailand visit will remain incomplete if you do not visit the temples there. A testament of its brilliant cultural extravaganza and architectural marvel, there are a whole of temples that one can explore.

4. Caving

Some temples are also inside caves and for adventure seekers, this is one of the most thrilling one they can engage in!

5. Trekking

From beaches to mountains, from concrete jungles to hidden caves in the wilderness – Thailand offers it all which makes it a trekking haven.

6. Full-moon Parties

You cannot pull away from the party scenes when you are in Thailand. Be it Live music or full-moon parties on the beach, dance-shows in the casinos or the famous Bangla Street of Phuket which is any party goers’ paradise – this country knows how to have a good time!

Offbeat Places to Visit in Thailand:

To most, Thailand means Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket and Ko Samui but it is more than just party scenes and beaches. This is what is gathered during my first visit to Thailand. I wanted to try something different so decided to take the leap of faith and opted to explore North of Thailand and my second visit to Thailand comprised of the South.

1. Chiang Mai

Photo of Chiang Mai, Thailand by Sinchita Sinha

The largest city in Northern Thailand that was founded in 1292 is known as the centre of Thai handicrafts. This city even houses of the most famous pilgrimage sites of Thailand – Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple that is located at an elevation of 3,520 feet on the slopes of one of the highest peaks of Thailand – Mount Suthep. The city also offers a whole potpourri of charming, unique experiences that one can only “never image”. To know more about what one can indulge in a place which is as less explore as Chiang Mai, I reckon, you read the Travel Guide on Chiang Mai .

2. Chiang Rai

Further north of Chiang Mai, lies Chiang Rai at an elevation of 1,150 feet, surrounded by the mountains and sharing roadways with Myanmar and Laos in the north and Lampang in the south. And the temple of Wat Rong Khun is what Chiang Rai is best known for – a striking all-white temple that lies 14 kms south of the city.

3. Hat Yai

Photo of Hat Yai, Hat Yai District by Sinchita Sinha

Located far south of Thailand and sharing border with Malaysia, this remains an underrated gem of Thailand. And one may not know this, but if you are flying from Malaysia to Thailand, this is probably the best way to enter Thailand.

Why?

Because the queue at the “Visa-on-Arrival” counter is next to nil and you get your Visa processed quickly as opposed to the back-breaking queue you cannot avoid at Bangkok airport. Also, from Hat Yai you can head to Ko Lipe.

What to Eat?

Literally my favourite place when it comes to South-east Asian cuisine as it caters to my tastebuds!

1. Tom Yum Goong – One of my favourites since it is a piquant clear soup that opened up my sinuses, this iconic Thai dish is a perfect blend of a variety of spices, herbs and sauces namely - lemongrass, shallots, fish sauce, galangal, mushrooms, kaffir lime leaves, lime juice and red chili peppers. You can replace seafood with chicken or have a mix of seafood and chicken.

2. Tom Kha Kai – A softer and creamier version of Tom Yum Goong made with coconut milk, galangal, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, mushrooms and chicken.

3. Gaeng Daeng – Best served with a bowl of piping hot rice, the distinct flavour of this Thai Red Curry comes from the crushed red chillies with a base of garlic, shallots, blue ginger and lemongrass which comes together with accompaniment of coconut milk and vegetables like eggplant, mushrooms, or tomatoes and chicken breast slices.

4. Pad Thai – Also known as stir-fried noodles is not too spicy. The classic ingredients for a delectable Pad Thai are flat rice noodles, seafood (alternatively, chicken, pork, or tofu), dried shrimp, tamarind, fish sauce, bean sprouts, shallots and egg which are stir-fried in a wok and sprinkled with roasted peanuts and chilies (you can avoid if you are scared of a little “hotness”).

5. Khao Soi – Clear chicken, beef or pork broth with hand sliced rice noodle topped with minced pork, tomatoes, garlic and fermented bean paste.

6. Khao Niao Mamuang – Otherwise popular as mango with sticky rice! Most loved traditional dessert that I ate literally everywhere I went.

7. Morning Glory - Also known as water spinach, this veggie is popularly known as Kongkang or Ong Choy in Southeast Asia and is a must try when you are headed to any of the Southeast Asian countries.

The most popular form of having it is the stir fried one and some places even garnish with crispy fried finely sliced garlic. It does not contain any meat, but it does contain fish and oyster sauce, so vegetarians beware! Ensure you mention “vegan” when ordering this green delicacy. You will find this is every single street food stall in Thailand.

Where to Eat?

The best place to eat without any worry of being overcharged is - Night Markets and mind you, there are many. Or to any local roadside eatery. And none will disappoint you.

Things to Remember While Visiting Thailand:

There are always some pointers that one should be wary of when visiting a new country. Some of the things travellers should be mindful of when exploring Thailand are:

• It is a different culture. Respect it. Don’t wear shorts or revealing clothes while planning to visit their temples. In case you are wearing shorts, carry a sarong or a stole so that you can cover yourself before entering their place of worship or you will have to pay to get one before entering a temple.

• Avoid dark alleys. You might feel adventurous and try to explore some hidden corners (for your Insta page) but you might end up getting mugged!

• Thailand is known for following strict drug-related policies so ensure you don’t indulge in any unlawful activity.

The list of things and activities Thailand offers is unending and the queries regarding the same will the endless. The ones that I covered are the usual ones that people ask. If there is anything more you would like to know drop a message in the “Comment” section and I will get back to you.
