Day 1

I reached Kozhikode or Calicut by train from Bangalore via Coimbatore. You can reach Calicut by road, air or rail and the best time to enjoy this beautiful city is between September and February. I checked in at Hilton hotel and please use booking.com to book hotels. The site gives you rating for the rooms and facilities the hotel provides coupled with a good bargain for hotels across the world.

Calicut is a coastal city in the southern part of India and a major business hub for the state of Kerala. It has and will remain a significant spice trade center and this is where Portuguese explorer Vasco da gama landed in the year 1498.

I am a frequent visitor to this city hence I will recommend that if you are on a budget, stay at Hilton hotel and gorge on the delicious Malabar cuisine at Paragon restaurant just behind this hotel and close to the Calicut beach. I have never been to any other restaurants in Calicut except a couple of times to check if the food is as good as of the Paragon restaurant.

Depending on your check in time at the hotel you can decide to spend your evening at the Calicut beach watching the sunset or visit The Mishqal Mosque nearby.

Mishqal Mosque is a four storied structure situated in Kuttichira and is more than 650 years old. It was constructed by a Yemeni merchant Nakhooda Mishqal using timber. Originally it was a five storied mosque but was reduced to four floors following Portuguese attack in the year 1510. The mosque has 47 doors, and 24 pillars which supports the entire structure and of particular note is that you will not find any minarets or a dome to indicate it's a mosque.

By the end of the day you are sure to be famished and would rush to Paragon restaurant for Aapams and Mango fish curry and end up in the bed with beautiful memories of the city.
