I’ve lived in Kanpur for the most part of my life, and it has been quite an experience. I moved to Delhi over two years ago to pursue my Bachelors’ and one thing that has been common in my interactions with anyone new I’ve met is the question, “Really? But you don’t look or behave like you’re from Kanpur.” Now, I’ll quickly explain the actual implication of that question, it simply is a way of asking, how can you be from Kanpur if you don’t always chew tobacco and are civil in general. It was almost frustrating to see the stereotypical image of the city I grew up in and that of someone from Kanpur. So, here’s my way of trying to redefine Kanpur, beyond all the stereotypes.
Kanpur with its rich history is far more than just a tobacco chewing and spewing city, it was a major center during the Revolt of 1857, with important luminaries like Nana Sahib and Tatiya Tope hailing from the city. It was also deemed as the ‘Manchester of India’ at a point of time when the textile industry of the city was at its peak. So, what I'm trying to say is that, Kanpur has its fair share of everything and I'll tell you how.
A rich history and heritage
Kanpur Sangrahalaya is the official museum in Kanpur, established in 1999. It houses artifacts and exhibits that tell the tale of the events and people who influenced the making of Kanpur city, including many interesting details about the historical past of the city. Located in Phool Bagh Ground at the intersection of Mall Road and the Kanpur-Lucknow Road, the museum's collection includes an old colonial period artillery gun.
Timings: 10.30 am - 4.30 pm
This public city park was built after the Indian Independence in honor of Nana Sahib who played a major role in the Revolt of 1857. Previously known as Memorial well, the park has several statues of freedom fighters like Rani Laxmi Bai, Tatya Tope, and Nana Saheb and served as the location of the Bibighar Massacre. You can enjoy a walk among the lush green trees or sit by the pond.

Beautiful Places of Devotion
You've probably heard about ISKCON - International Society For Krishna Consciousness, well then, you're in for a treat. Iskcon was built on the idea of complete devotion and self-discovery, and ISKCON Kanpur is no different. It's a beautiful place with marvelous architecture, ample greenery and serenity. It also comprises of some canteens and stalls serving delicious vegetarian food and is a must visit if you'd like to have a close interaction with peace. They even organise cultural events, workshops and youth fests from time to time.

Built in 1875 in honour of the British who lost their lives in the war of 1857, Kanpur Memorial Church was designed by Walter Granville, architect of the east Bengal Railway, in Lombardic gothic style. This church is beautifully constructed and a must visit if you're in Kanpur.

Infrastructure at its best
A symbol of pride for all Kanpurites, Green Park Stadium has a huge capacity of 32,000 and is the one of the only international level stadium in the state of Uttar Pradesh. This one boasts of hosting numerous international cricket matches including four of IPL, where thousands of Indians held their breaths and hoped for India's victory. It’s not just a stadium for me, it is also the place where I watched my first cricket match live when India played against South Africa. So, the next time you think of Kanpur's infrastructure, think of this.

Does this place really need an introduction? I guess not. One of the most prominent engineering institutes in the world, IIT Kanpur, one of the oldest IITs was established in 1959. An epitome of superior education and research, IITK is also adept with impeccable infrastructure. It's home to some of the most brilliant minds in the world and is the alma-mater of many more. So, just take a stroll amidst the tree laden roads or grab a double shot espresso or Devil's own at discounted prices at the IITK Cafe Coffee Day.
Plenty of fun and amusement
Everyone needs to have some fun and a place to flock to on hot summer weekends, right? That's where Blue World comes in. It's one of Uttar Pradesh’s best theme parks with two parts to it : the Fairy land water park and the Adventure dry rides. The park is full of options for people from all walks of life, with rides ranging from Free falls and Chair lifts for thrill seekers to family rides like columbus and Polipo Octopus. You'll also be able to have loads of fun while sliding down the Master blasters or just chilling in the wave pool. And if you feel like grabbing a snack in between, they have a variety of options to offer so yay!

Moti Jheel is one of the most popular spot for families in the evenings and joggers in the mornings. It technically refers to the Pond inside 'Kargil Park' that has been recently renovated. But, Kanpurites refer the entire area surrounding this pond as Moti jheel. It also comprises of a new 'Bal Udyan park' which has fun activities like boating, zorb ball and is a great picnic spot.

Naveen Market is one of Kanpur's biggest markets that has recently received a make over of sorts. You can find anything from clothes and footwear to electronics and home decor here. The best part about this market is the fact that it has something for every budget. Also, while you're there, do try the yummy Chhole Bhature with an orange squash at the iconic Treat restaurant.
This one's the oldest market in the city and is almost always bustling with the local crowd. You can easily score some nice yet inexpensive footwear, bags and apparel here. It's pretty popular for purchasing household goods at low prices.
To be honest, there's a lot more that I want to say to break the myths about the city I grew up in, but I think this is enough for now. So, the next time you meet someone with misconceptions about Kanpur, you know what to say and the places to take them to!
