Almost all Bengalis are familiar with this name "Glenary's " But those who don't know what Glenary's is, here I am sharing some history and information of this iconic landmarks in Darjeeling.
It is more than 100 years old restaurant , Glenary's has been around since the time of the British Raj. Though this place was not always called Glenary's. Back in the day, it was called "Vado" after it's Italian owner and later Pliva. But after India's independence, Glenary's changed hands, and eventually the name got changed too.At present it's Run by the Edwards.In 1959 the Late A. T. Edwards, was offered the role of manager, who was working there also a local of darjeeling. His family later bought the property. family.In fact, the family still has the list of the first day’s sale which amounted to Rs.396.00!
Glenary's Bakery & Cafe is well-known for it's breakfast . During breakfast, you get items like sandwiches, burgers, rolls, pies, pizzas, pastries, cakes and many other items including fresh bread and loaves. And of course, there are the famous Darjeeling tea and coffee.
Glenary's is located on Nehru Road, near Clock Tower, Chauk Bazaar, Darjeeling.
Glenary's is open from 8AM to 9:30PM
The entire place has a touch of Victorian or British style of architecture. The huge French windows, decoration ,old school red telephone booth everything gives you British aesthetic vibe.The Glenary’s is a two-storeyed building with the multi cuisine restaurant at the top floor.The upper floor restaurant has a lovely outdoor seating arrangement from where you can see a part of the city . While inside the restaurant you can enjoy some real good live music.
In the bakery section the aroma of the freshly baked cakes and muffins will give you a heavenly feeling.There are seating arrangements on one side and an open terrace from where you can see the Darjeeling city. It is a very quaint and lovely place to have your breakfast.
Each and every bakery product freshly baked and prepared. Every product has its own self life or expiry date which mentioned along with the price tag. If you want to pack some delights on your way back then surely their lemon tarts, fruit cakes, muffins, rolls, pies, croissant and burger buns will be the great choice .
The Glenary’s old world charm is unmissable. It’s everywhere, from the building’s facade to the classy and warm interior to the delicious food they serve, it’s easy to see why it is such a people’s favourite.Surely this place of Darjeeling should be added to your wishlist next when you will visit to this queen of hills.
