The picturesque locations in Bollywood movies and songs inspire a lot of travellers to explore these delightful locations. And when it comes to song videos like Gerua from 'Dilwale' movie with stunning backdrops, magnificent mountains, mystical glaciers, mesmerising waterfalls, fascinating rainbows, and breathtaking locations, who would not want to explore those locations? Watching our favourite on-screen Jodi Sharukh Khan and Kajol romancing in these gorgeous locations inspired us to travel across Iceland and explore all the shooting locations.
We have created a sample itinerary with all the places in the Gerua song. Considering we start from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, this itinerary will cover all the shooting locations. All the shooting locations are part of the Ring Road itinerary, so you can cover all the places while driving across the Ring road.
1. Seljalandsfoss
Remember the gorgeous sunset shots behind the waterfall in the song. Those are from the incredible Seljalandsfoss. It is one of the few waterfalls in Iceland where you can walk behind the waterfall. We recommend visiting the waterfall during sunset or golden hour to get the best views of the waterfall. The waterfall is easily accessible from the Ring Road. There is a parking place where you can pay a nominal fee to park. Remember to wear waterproof gear while visiting, or you will get drenched.
Driving distance from Reykjavík - 142 km
Time Needed - 1-2 hours
Tip - You can also visit one of the hidden waterfalls of Iceland known as Gljúfrabúi, which is just a 10-minute walk from Seljalandsfoss.
2. Skógafoss
Another waterfall with the stunning rainbow shot in the song is Skógafoss. Just 30 minutes away from the Seljalandsfoss, this impressive waterfall can steal your heart away. Known for its 15m width and a flat drop of 60m in height, Skógafoss is magnificent. This waterfall is visible from the ring road, and you can easily reach the waterfall. You can walk close to the waterfall or climb the stairs to reach the top of the waterfall. The misty waterfall can leave you drenched, so wear waterproof clothes if planning to go close to the waterfall.
Driving distance from Seljalandsfoss - 30 km
Time Needed - 1-2 hours
Tip - You can also visit Kvernufoss, only a few meters away from Skógafoss.
3. The Plane Wreck
The Plane Wreck is the same plane where Sharukh Khan is standing on an abandoned plane in an opening shot of the song. The aeroplane is not a prop. It is an actual flight that crashed in 1973 and is still lying there since then. The plane crash is on the black sand beach of Sólheimasandur, about four miles south of the Iceland ring road. This site is now a popular tourist attraction. This location is quite far from the parking place at Ring road, so you have to either walk for 4 miles to reach the plane wreck site, or you can opt for the shuttle bus that runs from parking to the plane wreck site in the summer months. There is no sign on the road for the parking place for the wreck site, but you can find it on google maps here.
Driving distance from Skógafoss- 9.3 km
Time Needed - 2-4 hours
GPS Coordinates - 63°27’32.7″N 19°21’53.3″W
4. Reynisfjara Beach
Every one of us fell for the beautiful yellow saree shot where Kajol flaunts the yellow saree with the backdrop of a black sand beach. The black sand beach and the glorious basalt rock columns make the video more dramatic and cinematic. The black sand beach is a highlight of Iceland with stunning rock formations on the shore and is also one of the most dangerous beaches in the world with its sneaker waves which can rise to 40m. We recommend following all the safety guidelines and looking for safety signs when visiting this beach.
Driving distance from Plane Wreck- 35 km
Time Needed - 1-2 hours
Tip - You can visit the beautiful town of Vik near the black sand beach.
5. Jökulsárlón
The spectacular scenery of the floating icebergs and glaciers shown in the song is from one of Iceland's natural crown jewels, Jökulsárlón. This place seems out of the world for its glory and beauty. The melting glacier has led to the formation of the lagoon in which the melted icebergs that are broken float and create breathtaking scenery. The icebergs in the lagoon slowly melt and drift out to sea, which is then polished by the sea waves and thrown to the shore creating semi-transparent ice pieces. As a result, the beach has many ice pieces that shine in the sun like a diamond. Thus the beach is named diamond beach.
Driving distance from Reynisfjara Beach- 200 km
Time Needed - 2-4 hours
Tip - You can visit Diamond beach, just in front of the glacier.
6. Vestrahorn
One of the most photogenic places in Iceland is Vestrahorn. The mountain backdrops to droll over in Gerua song are from Vestrahorn. The black sand beach and the magnificient mountains in the southeast Iceland are breathtaking. You can reach here by taking a short gravel road drive off the Ring Road.
Driving distance from Jökulsárlón - 75 km
Time Needed - 2-4 hours
Tip - You can visit the Viking Village and Stokksnes.
The best and cheapest way to reach these places is via road trip across Ring road in Iceland. You can rent a car or camper van to road trip across Iceland. The Gerua song is an example of how Bollywood can inspire tourism. It has shown the best locations in Iceland in the best possible way. Iceland is the most diverse country with extreme contrasts. From glaciers to volcanoes, from gushing waterfalls to black sand beaches, from stunning landscapes to lava fields, Iceland has contrasting places to visit. Plan your long pending Iceland trip now.
