Paro is a quaint town, a stark contrast to thimphu which is quite an irony considering the fact that Paro boasts the only airport of Bhutan.
imagine rice paddy fields at 7000 feet and thats what Paro is all about. The dzong of Paro is again like all dzongs of bhutan very intricately designed. But the USP of this place is the breathtaking view of the scenery all around and the plane flying within touching distance from the dzong. Medicinal herbs are offered by the monk sitting inside the Dzong
The national museum of paro location is fantastic with lovely views of the mountains . Inside bhutanese artifacts and traditional costumes are very neatly displayed. Worth the visit
The drukgyel dzong is in ruins now, built like a fort where people took shelter during the war. It is around half an hour drive from paro town . Again stunning views of the paddy fields below . I walked all around the dzong absorbing the panoramic view of snow capped peaks . And then when i entered the dzong, it was like entering a fort built centuries ago and in such a ruined state that the only occupants were the birds perched on the high ceiling inside. I was the only one inside and as i was taking a stroll . I felt an eerie silence which was slightly frightening because i felt presence of some kind of energy inside though it could be possible that my mind was playing tricks due to the serenity of the place
the market place or town square as u may call it is basically 2 to 3 roads parralel to each other with pretty bhutanese buildings lined on both the sides with shops displaying lovely souvenirs and hand made paintings . Imagine traditional houses on both sides and breathtaking mountains on the front and the rear, it was like a fairy land. And with a heavy downpour which lasted for 10 minutes, it was icing on the cake. Because post rains, the rain washed streets looked cleaner than before and greens appeared greener than ever. Paro deserves atleast 4 days to get the feel of such a charming place where u could see the contentment in people's faces , enjoying the laid back atmosphere. It was like going back in time when people had all the time in the world to interact with people, nature and everything around them. We city dwellers have got to learn a lot from these people.
