Running across multiple borders, the Mekong River is a mighty waterway that is well worth taking a cruise on; here are some facts about this river that will add to its allure.
It’s Fed from the Himalayas
The Mekong River begins its journey at the Tibetan Himalayas; the melting snow from here goes through mountain gorges of the Yunnan province in China. Tributaries along the way also contribute to the river’s flow which is added to significantly once it reaches the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet.
The 12th Longest River
Did you know that the Mekong River is the 12th longest river on the planet! It spans a total length of approximately 4,350 km (2,700 miles) and in fact, it’s Asia’s seventh longest river, while being Southeast Asia’s longest river. Interestingly, it flows though six nations, namely Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and China.
A Source of Livelihood
Those heading on a Mekong River cruise in Luang Prabang, Thailand or other destinations will be able to see how this river provides a vital source of livelihood to locals; this includes water for irrigation of crops as well as fishing; not surprisingly, the Mekong basin is where you will find the world’s biggest inland fishery.
Diverse Names
Since the river passes through the borders of different countries, it’s known by diverse names too. In Vietnam, it’s referred to as “Nine Dragons” or “Cuu Long” due to its multiple branches, while the Chinese call it “Lancang Jiang” which translates to “Turbulent River”. In Laos and Thailand, it is known as “Mother Water” or “Mae Nam Kong”.
