Pictures, videos, blogs had made me longing to make a trip to the beautiful landscape, when men money and time all came together we set the ball rolling to explore the most beautiful place on mother earth.
We were six people who were part of the trip and we packed our bags departed from Bengaluru to Delhi, we had booked our bus for departure from Delhi to Manali in the evening and the Government run Volvo bus was very comfortable and made our journey to Manali very peacefull. To our surprise we had landslides happening all over Himachal and it was raining profusely all over the journey and we just hoped the clouds go away so that we have a peaceful and safe trip leh.
We reached Manali and we were already soaking in the beautiful landscape, the roads were passing through the woods, sun kissing us with it rays on the window pane of our bus, we were already loving the visual which our eyes were treated to, the rain had already made the landscape look more beautiful and with the streams swelling with water, from the recent heavy downpour. We booked a room nearby the Manali market and went to the Bike rental’s (Manali Bike Rental). Which we had already pre-booked from Bangalore, so we picked our bikes two 500 CC desert storms and one Bullet classic 500 CC, came back to our room to take rest and prepare ourselves for the journey from Manali . We strolled through the Manali market in the evening brought some basic components, which was essential for our trip tomorrow like boots, extra fuel cans, basic medicine, puncture kit and just soak in the climate.
The alarms started buzzing and we had planned to leave Manali early morning, but weather god’s have different scheme of plans it was drizzling in the morning and now that in the manali temperature, means trouble. We decided wasting time won’t help us we packed our luggage draped it around with the protective covers and decided to brave the drizzle and started moving towards Rohtang pass, the view while riding through the small by lanes towards Rohtang pass will make you feel gasping more, The rains had made the green vegetation look darker and the rain has made us shiver with cold and our biking gears were all wet, We decided to halt at Keylong and the journey from manali to Keylong gave us many first, our first high altitude bike ride, Our first bike ride braving continuous train with low temperatures, These experience made us work in sync with the nature, machine and technology for making a memorable trip.
We woke up in the morning sipping our early morning tea watching the mountains standing tall and proud against us, we got ready put our gears, started our bikes and we were travelling towards lesser civilisation, challenging roads, ready to face the low oxygen, breath taking landscape, we actually started feeling the pinch, the dust was building up making our ride treacherous, off roading had begun we had to cross small waterfalls, between the roads, we started riding like a team advising about the dangers to the other two bikes trailing and that is what you enjoy the leh ladakh trip, you can be the fastest biker on earth but leh ladkah will make you a responsible rider, very aptly because, you really don’t get a second chance, you don’t respect the mountains they have a way of teaching you. We decided to up our mettle and reach pang and we booked our tent to stay for the night and continue our journey next day.
We had a rough night high altitude sickness had affected us ,we were feeling the lack of oxygen severe headache, nausea, we took one dose of high altitude sickness tablet and slowly started getting ready, our next destination was Leh ,We were still reeling under the high altitude sickness and just manoeuvring the twist and turn getting down from the peak of the mountain to the plains of leh, We started feeling better once we hit the plains and had our lunch and the way to Leh. Leh is again beautiful with lot of vegetation happening around, you will also start seeing the mighty Himalayan rivers, gushing in its might, you will than find a lot of army settlements all over ,the barren cold desert, with its monasteries to your left and right, you will come across the Leh Palace modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet,We reached the city if leh, you will see that the city is buzzing with trade and tourist activities, so we had to park our bikes and find a stay for the night and explore the city of Leh in the night and plan our tour around leh for the next days, We could not use our rented biked from Manali for the same as the Leh motor bikes union have put restriction on the use of non Leh registered bikes and yes now that’s a really bad scene you end up paying the rent for bikes your hired from Manali and also for the bikes rented from leh which is like double payment of rent but that’s how the situation is, there is no point in complaining.
We did a lot of research with various tour operators regarding the places to visit in Leh ladakh, we finally finalised on, to these places to visit-Khardungla Pass-Nubra Valley-Pangong Tso Lake-Turtuk village, and this was our plan for our next three days to be spent in Leh ladakh. We decided to hire a Xylo for this three day trip so first we went to explore the Kardungla pass it is considered to be the highest motorable road in the world and the journey to this place is an experience which one has to experience standing tall at 18,379 ft, the travel to this peak is treacherous with BRDO putting tremendous man power to maintain this road round the year, the snow clad mountains will make you think about Christmas at least for a south Indian like me. We than moved down the heights towards the plains and set our journey to the plains of Nubra valley ,Nubra valley is again a wonder, where you will find snow clad mountains sand in the between and vegetation also. The double humped Camel is again a sight which is very unique ,I am not sure if you will find these camels anywhere else In the world and we decided to stay the night over in the nubra valley, our stay was amidst a farm where there were flowers all around was a sight which was soothing and picturesque. The next day we set out to visit Pangong Tso Lake, The must to see place once you visit Leh ladakh again thanks to Three Idiots movie and tourist all over the world come here and can we complain about the same, you just stand on the bank of the lake and the beauty of the mountain amidst the crystal clear blue water will make you forget all that you have seen until then and will put you in a trans of its own, With a heavy heart we departed the pang so lake, looking behind you realise the most beautiful things will always turn into beautiful memories. We than set out to visit to this beautiful village of Turtuk which was part of Pakistan until 1971,The village you can still view the bullet marks of cross firing the people are meeting tourist after 2009 and you can see the curiosity and fear in the eyes of the inhabitants of Turtuk village, The older people here have witnessed the pain and agony of a war the loss of the dear ones but the village is a dream which I urge every Indian to visit the apricot here is something you have to taste, The majority of the population rely on apricot, cultivation for their living. We witnessed some of the most scenic picturesque view on mother earth and with the thoughts of having to leave this beautiful place towards normalcy, the reality of leaving leh, were consuming us. We than reached Leh market the next day and started our journey back to Manali we again took three days to reach manali, we returned our bikes to the Bike rental settled our dues took the bus the next day to Delhi, stayed one day in Delhi and took our early morning flight to Bangalore returning to normalcy after brief time at heaven.
Some beautiful faces from this dream land of Leh ladkah and Himachal.
