Umred Karhandla Wildlife sanctuary is situated at around 60 kilometers distance from Nagpur, in Maharashtra state of India. It is also known as Umred Pauni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary. Umred city is the nearest city at 53 kilometers away.

This sanctuary has successfully carried Tiger breeding in the recent past. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 2012. As per 2014 census, there are around 4 adult Tigers and 9 Tiger cubs in this area. Efforts are taken to declare it as a “Project Tiger” reserve.

This wildlife sanctuary has an area of 189.30 square kilometers. It is connected to the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve through forests along the River Wainganga. Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is situated 40 kilometers north of this sanctuary. It is located 50 kilometers southwest of Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary & Tiger Reserve. Pench Tiger Reserve and Bor Tigre Reserve two nearby Tiger reserves connected to the Umred Pauni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.

Maharashtra State tourism department has 6 nights / 7 days package tour of wildlife sanctuaries in and around Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.

It is rich in flora and fauna. It is a bio-diversity hot-spot.

Fauna includes Barking Deer, Blue Bull, Chital, Flying Squirrel, Gaurs, Honey Badger, Indian Bison, Mouse Deer, Pangolin, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, and Wild Dogs. Leopards numbering 6 are also there in this wildlife sanctuary as per the 2014 census. Birds species count comes to 90. These birds belong to 22 families of 12 different orders. 19 species of reptiles belonging to nine families are found here. Four species of reptiles belong to endangered species.

As part of providing income to the locals, 20 local people are trained as guides.

Ho do I Go to Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary?

The main entrance to the Umred Pauni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary is at Karhandla village. Other than Karhandla gate, other gates are Pauni gate, Pullar gate and Gothangaon gate.

Nagar city and Bhandara town are at around 60 kilometers distance from the wildlife sanctuary. There are frequent buses from Umred, Nagpur and Bhandara. Nagpur is the major city close to the wildlife sanctuary. Umred and Bhandara are small towns.

Nearest railway station and airport are at Nagpur.

Around 100 kilometers of road has been there inside the sanctuary, out of which 44 kilometers of road is open tot he tourist. Earlier, 20 vehicles were allowed in the mornings and evenings. Recently, private vehicle entry has been banned.
