New York City may be a place that never sleeps, but it is also a city that enjoys a lot of things. Planning a trip to NYC? Make it a point to experience this place beyond the touristy attractions. Presenting some of my picks:
1. Fall in Central Park
Fall is a season worth witnessing in NYC. As the trees shed their leaves, parks and sidewalks are carpeted in lovely hues of red, yellow, orange, pink, purple, brown, and more. Central Park is a popular avenue to experience the magic of autumn, with many locations to capture the colorful foliage. The Gapstow Bridge, the Lake, the areas around the Bethesda Fountain make some of the best spots to be charmed by the fall.
2. New Year's Eve at the Times Square
One of the most happening ways to ring in the new year is to watch the ball drop at Times Square. The New Year's Eve Ball is a gigantic geodesic sphere made of Waterford Crystal triangles. At 11:59 PM, a large crowd begins to cheer as the ball descends gradually from the top of One Times Square.
3. Christmas at the Rockefeller Center
30 Rockefeller Plaza becomes the talk of the town a few weeks before Christmas. Next to the glamorous Rockefeller Center, stands a tall Christmas tree, umpteen feet in height, its tip crowned by a dazzling star. This star is no ordinary piece of decoration, but an enormous one, made of millions of Swarovski crystals. In 2018 itself, the star was 9 feet 4 inches in length. One can take in the gorgeous view from the 3rd week of November until the first week of January each year.
4. Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden
New York has its own cherry blossom festival at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden which gleams in pink and white blooms. These sakura trees can be found in the beautiful Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden. The festival also offers a other activities and attractions related to the Japanese culture. Japanese food-tasting, origami workshops, bonsai appreciation sessions, Sohenryu tea ceremonies and Japanese folk dance performances are just a few such events to look forward to.
