Everyone who has been to Korean has surely made it a point to stop by Jeju - an island known for its natural wonders and a beautiful change of scenery from Korea's big city, Seoul.

Getting Around Jeju Island, South Korea
Driving in Jeju is the best way to get around Jeju Island's attractions. We hired a private driver to take us around most of the Jeju attractions indicated below. He was down-to-earth, very generous in sharing his knowledge about Jeju and also fun!
We invited him to all of our meals and he had us cheers to Makkoli, a traditional alcoholic beverage native to Korea made of rice grains. It is milky, translucent in colour.
We paid for 130,000 won/ day and hired him for 2.5 days for our trip in Jeju.

1. Woljeongri Beach (월정리해변)
Woljeongri Beach is known for its scenery, tranquil white sand and beautiful emerald ocean. Near the beach, a stretch of cozy and beautiful cafes align the streets. In addition, a drive along the beach is a great way to appreciate the exotic landscapes of Jeju-do island.
Known for its soft white sand and clear blue waters, Woljeongri Beach has become increasingly popular among the younger crowd. Many of the cozy cafes that line the beach also have deck chairs that face out towards the ocean, offering great sea views
If you do have the chance to drive, take the coastal road heading east from Jeju International Airport to arrive at WolJeongri Beach. It is a spectacular scenic route and an excellent way to appreciate the unique natural landscapes of Jeju-do island

2. Manjanggul Lava Tube (Manjanggul Cave)
Jeju is well known for its natural monuments and thus visiting the Manjanggul Lava Tube, one of the top 10 longest lava tubes in the world, should definitely be on your list.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site was formed when lava that was beneath the ground flows up to the surface and hardens, forming a crust. The lava below continues flowing until it hollows out forming a tunnel.
What makes the Manjanggul Lava Tube unique is that its features are all very distinct and well maintained. Expect to see many interesting geological structures such as lava stalactites, lava toes, as well as resident bats!
Be sure to spot the famous "Stone Turtle" structure which resembles the shape of Jeju island. The star attraction is at the end of the walk - the tallest lava column in the world at 7.8m!
While the entire cave snakes for around 13km, only 1km of that is open to tourists, so a round-trip will take slightly less than an hour.
TIP: Temperatures in the tunnel do go down to a range of 11°C to 21°C, so do bring a jacket along with you and wear proper walking shoes.

3. Bijarim Forest
The Bijarim Forest is home to around 2,800 nutmeg trees, making it the largest nutmeg tree forest in the world. The trees stand between 7-14 m in height, 50-110 cm in diameter, and range from 500 to 800 years old!
The main attraction here is the oldest nutmeg tree on Jeju-do, the 'Ancestor tree of the Bija trees', found in the middle of the forest. At over 800 years old, it is also the oldest evergreen tree on the entire island.
There are two routes available for visitors to stroll through this rare national monument - a 40-minute trek, or a longer, 90-minute course. Inhale deeply, as nothing beats the fresh air in the forest.

4. Seongsan Ilchubong Peak (Sunrise Peak)
Also known as "Sunrise Peak", this UNESCO Heritage Site is one of Jeju's must-see natural attractions.
Seongsan Ilchubong is a crater, formed and risen from under the sea over 10,000 years ago due to a volcanic eruption. At 180m tall, It is also said that this is the best spot in Jeju to watch the sun rising over the ocean. The sedimentary strata revealed and eroded by waves is witness to nature's act of work.
It is a rather steep hike up to the peak and should take you about an hour. Upon reaching the peak, you will find 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, making it look like a gigantic bowl (or a matcha egg tart, if you will)?
One of the best periods to visit this beautiful geographical landscape is in spring as the surrounding yellow canola flowers would be in full bloom.
If you're there during the summer time instead, catch the haenyeo performance at 1:30pm.

Haenyeo, which translates to sea women, are traditional divers who harvest seafood by hand from the ocean floor. They often slice up their catch straight away, offering the audience fresh seafood right out of the ocean!

5. Sangumburi Crater (산굼부리)
An extinct volcano crater with a huge circumference of over 2 km, this national monument is formed so perfectly that it looks like an impressive man-made circular stadium.
While no one is allowed in the centre of the crater, the variety of lush plant life that surrounds the crater is enough to leave you in awe.
The north side of the crater greets you with Nandaeseong vegetation such as red-thorn trees, magnolia trees, along with the rare winter strawberries, while the south side of the crater is where you can find Ondaerim vegetation such as evergreens, maples, and mountain strawberry trees.
If you're a Korean drama fan, you'll be glad to know that the crater was also a filming site of the drama ''Love Wind, Love Song" and "Goddess of Marriage".

6. Seongeup Folk Village
Located at the foot of Halla Mountain on Jeju Island, this well-preserved village is very unique as there are still people living there the way their ancestors did, till this very day.
Walking around the village is free and often the locals will invite you to try a hand at some of their daily chores done the old korean traditional way such as rope twisting.
As you find your way around 3,000 stone and clay houses, notice how the alleys are straight yet curvy at the same time. Apparently, it was intentionally built this way to keep away the harsh winter winds!
While there, try and spot the traditional black pigs littered throughout the village, all of which would probably end up on your dinner plate. Jeju black pork is said to be very nutritious and of course, delicious!

7. Jeju Folk Village
Another attraction for cultural buffs is the famous Jeju Folk Village, also known for it being the filming site for the 2003 hit television series Dae Jang Geum (Da Chang Jin/ Jewel in the Palace).
Paying homage to the traditional villages of Korea in the 1890s, this attraction encapsulates that era perfectly with its 117 houses, capturing scenes of different village lives including - Mountain Village, Hill-Country Village, Fishing Village and Shamanism Village.
In them, you can find a traditional wedding hall, horseback riding picture-taking zone, among others.

8. Yongduam Dragon Head Rock
The scientific explanation for the formation of this geological monument is simply the erosion of coastal rocks over thousands of years. However, it is the many stories behind this dragon shaped rock which makes visiting this rock that much more interesting.
One legend has it that a dragon was stealing precious jade from Mt. Halla but got shot down by the mountain deity. When he fell down on to Yongduam, his body immediately sank into the ocean and his head rapidly froze while looking into the sky.
Another has it that a white horse, who dreamt of being a dragon flying to the sky, was caught by a soldier and thus froze to become a rock.
If time permits, take some time to walk down the short trail where you can get a better view of the rock and the coastline.
There are also a ton of cafes and restaurants nearby serving fresh seafood if you're up for that!

9. EAT: Raw Fish Restaurant (해녀횟집)
Jeju Island is known for its fresh seafood and raw fish, served sashimi style.
These seafood are caught by the well-known, Haenyeo 'mermaids' aka female divers who catch live seafood by hand from the ocean floor! How impressive is that!
A must-try in Jeju is definitely the abalone sashimi, as vouched by many on TripAdvisor.

10. EAT: Hwaro Hyang Restaurant, Black Pork Street
If you know me, you know I love meat.
Jeju is famous for black pork and this is definitely a must-have.
Black Pork Street, as its name suggests, is lined with restaurants all selling Jeju's most iconic black pork.
Hwaro Hyang Restaurant is one of the more popular restaurants in the area, serving fresh juicy black pork with your Korean BBQ.

11. Mysterious Road
Also known as Dokkaebi Road, it was absolutely baffling being on this road.
Our car seemed to be rolling uphill, going against all laws of gravity, I had to blink a couple of times as I tried to make sense of what I was seeing.
Although I knew it was just an optical illusion (The Mysterious Road is a slight downhill slope that looks like it is uphill because of the seemingly high surroundings), it was entertaining as we experienced it first-hand by putting pouring some water on the ground and watch it roll 'uphill'.

12. Hallasan National Park
You guys know I am a huge hiking enthusiast. Travelling to different countries to hike is probably one of my favourite ways to experience a destination.
In Jeju, Hallasan National Park is the holy grail for hiking. A UNESCO Heritage Site, it is located right at the heart of Jeju, with 368 parasitic volcanoes called Oreums (peaks) scattered around the main mountain.
Hallasan mountain is the tallest mountain in South Korea and offers many beginner-friendly hiking treks too.
With five different hiking routes that are below 10 km to choose from, you will not be disappointed by the spectacular views at the peak.
i. Seongpanak Trail:
Seongpanak → Dongneung Peak 9.6 km / 4 hrs 30 mins each way
ii. Eorimok Trail:
Eorimok → Nambyeok Bungijeom km / 3 hrs each way
iii. Eoseungsaengak Trail:
Eorimok → Eoseungsangak Peak 1.3 km / 30 min each way
iv. Yeongsil Trail:
Yeongsil - Nambyeok Bungijeom 5.8 km / 2 hrs 30 mins each way
v. Gwaneumsa Trail:
Gwaneumsa Temple - Dongneung Peak 8.7 km / 5 hrs each way
There are over 1,800 kinds of plants and 4,000 species of animals that reside in these mountains so take your time if you can, to stop and bask in the beauty of nature. Allocate at least 3 to 4 hours for this.
Do remember to bring lots of water and be dressed in suitable hiking attire. Take a light jacket with you even during the summer as it gets chilly at high altitudes.
TIP: Sunglasses and skin protection are also a must, as the sun does get strong on Hallasan even in the winter.

13. 1100 Highland or 1100 Meter Road
At 1100m above sea level, this wetland with its kilometre-long boardwalk offers beautiful views regardless of the season.
In winter, the trees are covered in glistening white snow, while in the fall, the leaves turn a rich mixture of yellow and orange.
The 1100 Meter Road passes through Hallasan, making it an easy stopover since you will be passing by on your way to/ from Hallasan National Park.
TIP: Located on Highway 1139 which will also take you past Eorimok, Yeongshil and Mysterious Road, I would recommend doing all these places on the same day, like we did for our Jeju itinerary.

14. Soesokkak Estuary
The Soesokkak Estuary is where fresh water from the Hyodoncheon stream meets the vast ocean. Soak up the tranquillity of the place as you watch the water flow to join the deep blue waters of the ocean.
Cliffs and odd-shaped lava formations line the sides of the water, adding to the character of this scenery.
Here, you might also see many small flat wooden boats, also known as "Teu". These boats have been used to ferry people across the estuary for centuries. Getting over to the other side is sure not an easy task. Look closely and you will find that the boat is actually pulled across the length of the estuary by a long rope strung between the two banks!
A ride on a Teu is available at a fee so you can take in the stunning beauty of the place by water.

15. Jeongbang Falls
Jeongbang Falls is one of the topmost waterfalls to visit in Jeju. Standing at 23m high, it is the only waterfall in Asia that falls directly into the ocean. You can experience this grand waterfall up close if you skip your way over some loose rocks as you venture further in. Staying dry is not guaranteed!
Also, try spotting an old, evergreen tree that perches majestically on the edge of the cliff, hovering precariously above the vast sea.
Another waterfall you may want to visit while here is the Sojeongbang Waterfall. Just a 300m eastwards' stone's throw away from Jeongbang Falls, head up to the observatory at the top of the cliff and you will be blessed with a breathtaking view of the great blue.

16. Cheonjiyeon Waterfall
Cheonjiyeon translates into "sky connected to land", which is exactly what you see when you cast your eyes on this gushing waterfall. Although it is only 22m high, the water flows as if it is falling from the heavens.
There is a 1km subtropical path available if you're up for a stroll to continue admiring this natural wonder. Hearing the sounds of the moving water does certainly strikes a connection between one and nature.
If you do get the chance, visit Cheonjiyeon at night when it is illuminated by lights. It is one heck of an ethereal beauty.

17. Oedolgae Rock
Jeju definitely has no lack of natural wonders and the Oedolgae Rock is another impressive one.
Standing at 10m tall, this rock rises above the emerald green waters and is surrounded by cliffs and lush greenery, forming the perfect backdrop to watch the sunset.
Fans of the 2003 hit television series Dae Jang Geum (Da Chang Jin/ Jewel in the Palace) would be happy to know that this was also one of the show's filming locations.
There is a walking trail, so if you're up for a trek, set aside around 2 hours of your day, and I promise you the views surrounding your trail will entertain you throughout.

18. EAT: Tam Gung Restaurant (탐궁)
I have mentioned Jeju's black pork multiple times in this post but I just cannot get enough of it!
Tam Gung restaurant is famous for barbecue and grilled food, especially for its Heuk Dwaeji Ogyeopsal - five layered black pig. Another popular item to order is its seasoned beef galbi.
As we all know, good food takes time, so be prepared to queue for this one as they have very limited seating - only about 10 tables.

19. Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff
Jusangjeolli means columnar joints, a geologic structure formed by volcanic lava when Hallasan Mountain erupted years ago. Flowing into the sea of Jungman, this staggering cliff that rose 20m over water is thus created.
After the lava cooled, the rocks started to erode and they slowly shaped themselves into what you see today - squares and hexagons of different heights and sizes (similar to the Giant's Causeway in Ireland).
Listen to the sound of the waves lapping the columns and take some time to admire the raw beauty of nature.

20. Cheonjeyeon Falls
Not to be mistaken for Cheonjiyeon Falls, Cheonjeyeon Falls is made out of 3 waterfalls! Set in the backdrop of lush green foliage, it is indeed a sight to behold.
To the east, water appears to fall from the ceiling of the cave, draping over a rocky cliff. The water forms a pool and from there falls twice more, creating the second and third waterfalls, before exiting into the ocean.
Legend states that the when night falls, seven nymphs from heaven will come to bathe in the waterfall's pond thus the pond is also known as "The Pond of God". These seven nymphs are carved on the side of the Seonimgyo Bridge, a gorgeous vibrant red bridge that certainly stands out from the rest of the forest.
This bridge connects Cheonjeyeon Falls with Jungmum Tourist Complex which has an assortment of restaurants for visitors.

21. Seogwipo Submarine
Want to explore the seas without having to acquire a scuba diving license? Seize your Finding Nemo moment and do away with the heavy scuba gear when you board the Seogwipo Submarine that goes deep into the 40-meter sea-bed.

Throughout the 1.5-hour experience, witness divers feeding schools of fishes, rare iridescent coral reefs and a beyond-belief shipwreck right at the bottom of the sea floor, all without getting wet!
Jeju's submarine tours is an unconventional, unmissable, once-in-a-lifetime experience. I've been canyoneering in Philippines, helmet diving in Boracay, diving in Maldives, but being in a submarine? No way!
Nothing comes close what this submarine tour can offer, and at a reasonable price point too.

22. Yongmeori Cliff/ Yongmeori Beach
Yongmeori Cliff, also known as Dragon Head Cliff, is located along the coastline of Sanbangsan. It is so named due to how it looks as if a dragon's head is going underwater.
Formed due to several volcanic eruptions, the layers of lava has cooled to form the undulating cliff walls all around you. Yongmeori is the oldest volcanic crater in Jeju Island. The sight, with its rocks stacked on top of each other and the cliffs by the sea, make it one of Jeju's most picturesque spots. This really reminds me of the Antelope Canyon in Arizona, doesn't it?
Haenyeos, the women sea-divers of Jeju may also be around selling sea cucumbers along the seashore if you would like to try some fresh catch!

23. Sanbangsan Mountain
A staggering 395.2 m above sea level, the Sanbangsan Mountain was formed due to a violent volcanic activity over 800,000 years ago. Layers upon layers of lava have cooled to form the majestic mountain you see today. You can expect to be rewarded with a spectacular view of the ocean.
According to Korean myths, it is said that the peak of Mt. Hallasan where Baekrokho Lake now exists was taken off and thrown to form this mountain. How interesting is that!
' Sanbang ', which translates into 'cave inside a mountain', is indeed what it is.
Here, you would find Sanbangsa Temple and the Bomunsa Temple with large Buddha statues where people do make offerings and pray for good health. Between the two temples, take a 20 minute walk along the stone steps which would lead you to the Sanbanggulsa Grotto.

24. EAT: Osulloc Museum
Calling all tea lovers! It is an absolute must to swing by the Osulloc Museum. We gained an insight about traditional Korean tea culture and its history in this building which is shaped like a green tea cup.
Don't forget to head up to the observatory on the second floor where you can enjoy the serenity of the surrounding green tea fields and the expansive landscape.
Take home authentic tea leaves or simply bask in the ambience of the indoor tea house with a cup of green tea. We couldn't pass off pairing their signature green tea roll cake and matcha ice cream!
The flagship Innisfree Jeju House is a picturesque glasshouse located is within the vicinity of the museum. You can shop for Innisfree cosmetic products and let your creative juices flow when you make your own DIY soap. It was such fun for us watching others design their own unique soap.

25. Hyeopjae Beach
The first thing you'd notice upon arriving is how glistening white the sand at Hyeopjae Beach is. The sand owes its colour to the large amounts of crushed seashells that have been mixed in.
The island view Hyeopjae Beach offers is almost like a slice of paradise. Take some time to stroll along the 9 km stretch of the beach with accompanying turquoise waters and admire the surroundings. You will also be able to spot the majestic Mt. Hallasan from the beach.

26. Hallim Park
Hallim Park is just a stone's throw from Hyeopjae Beach and has much to offer. Consisting of a variety of gardens, take some time to stroll through the 100,000m2 park and admire the abundant flora and fauna.
Depending on the season, the garden takes on a different character. It could be covered by a blanket of crisp white snow or skirted by pools of autumn gold and rust-coloured leaves - perfect for a photo. If you're visiting during February, the apricot trees are in bloom!
Tours are available to visit the Hyeopjaegul and Ssangyonggul Caves, formed when its resident volcano Mt. Halla erupted, and known to be the only 2D caves in the world. The park also has a children's amusement park, outdoor resort facilities and a folk village, so there is something for everyone.

27. EAT: Monsant Café
G-Dragon Kpop Fans must be excited as this cafe was opened by the man himself!
Expectedly, fans from all over the world gather at this cafe. However, even if you're not a big fan, this modern cafe with large reflective windows is the perfect spot to have a coffee and catch the sunset over the ocean. There is a rooftop so avid photographers like me can capture that perfect sunset shot!
