For any perfect and memorable holiday, you would need a well thought out itinerary that guides you well and makes your time there worthwhile. Since I have just come back from a fantastic, rejuvenating trip from Mauritius myself, here I am, presenting an itinerary for a 7-day trip to Mauritius that promises a wholesome, wonderful experience.

Best time to visit:

Mauritius enjoys a relatively mild climate throughout the year. As Mauritius is located in the southern hemisphere, the summer and winter months are opposite to seasons that we observe. So, their summertime is between November to April. Although it will be a bit humid this time, but the tropical weather with the ocean breeze and lovely air keep one in mood always. December to March is also the best time for scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. From May to October, the temperature is cooler and prevailing winds tend to blow over the island from the east and south-east. The lowest temperatures are felt in August, which falls to 20°C on the coast.

Visa Process:

Mauritius is one of those countries that gives Indian passport holders the benefit of Visa on arrival. If you have a valid return ticket, you will be granted a 60-day visa. While on your flight to Mauritius, you will be given two forms to fill. You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the period of stay allowed in Mauritius. The 2 visa forms should be duly completed. You must also carry 2 recent passport-size photographs along with your confirmed tickets.

Day 1

Multiple flights fly from Indian cities to Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Air Mauritius, Air India, and Emirates operate direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai. Among these, Air Mauritius provides good comfort and great in-flight entertainment options. Also, the food is wonderful. Direct flights from Delhi take about 7 hours to reach, whereas from Mumbai it takes an hour less.

Currency exchange:

1 MUR (Mauritian Rupee) is equivalent to 1.97 (almost 2) Indian Rupees. The best and most hassle-free place to get your currency exchanged is at the Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport after you land. You can also carry your Forex card with a good balance, since international credit and debit cards charge a lot of secret money that we only get to see once back home.

How to commute in Mauritius:

Mauritius is a tiny island, with majestic views and rich history at every corner. Almost all the important places in Mauritius are within a two-hour drive. It is also very easy to hire a car or driver. Taxis are stationed at every hotel. Car or scooter hire is a bit inexpensive. But Minibus excursions are a great way to go around for a tourist. These Minibuses pick up from almost all the hotels and resorts, and many of these resorts have bicycles and bicycle tours.

Where to stay:

Mauritius is mainly classified into 5 regions - north, east, west, south and central. It is best to divide your time among these regions so you can utilize the best of what the island has to offer.

Day 1:

From Day 1 to 3, stay near the West. The West and South-West coasts of Mauritius will give you a proper African feel. With thick bushes and wonderful trees, and sugarcane plantations all around, this region has some superb hotels and lagoons calm enough for swimming, snorkelling, diving, water-skiing, kayaking, pedal boats, and sailing activities. The Flic-en-Flac coastline has some good stay options. For the first 3 days, go dolphin watching and surfing on Tamarin Bay or Le Morne nearby, and a fantastic, one-of-a-kind African Safari at Casela Nature Park near the lush Black Water gorges where you can see zebras, giraffes, and African lions.

Day 2

Day 2-3:

Try the adrenaline-stimulating Seakart adventure at Grande Riviere Noire, where you get to drive an inflated speedboat across the ocean, far beyond the horizon! On Day 3, just experience the several activities your hotel will conduct. These hotels in Mauritius are famous for the involvement of guests and families in their different fun activities. Club Med La Plantation Albion and Hotel Sofitel Mauritius L'Impérial Resort & Spa are two of the best resorts around the west that ensure a fantastic stay with great activities.

Day 4

Day 4-5:

Head to the north for the next 2 days and stay at the luxurious and enticing resorts there. One of the best ones there is the LUX* Grand Gaube, which offers some great culinary experiences as well as some light, bright beach vibes. Spend one day visiting Château Labourdonnais close to Grand Bay and experience and discover a large variety of tropical fruit trees and colourful fragrant flowers. Visit the distillery of the famous Labourdonnais rum, which is right next to the Château quarter. Next, you can visit the Goodlands market, situated in a large village of 14,000 inhabitants. The market comes alive on Tuesdays and Fridays because of the fabric and fashion fairs, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the fruit and vegetable markets. The beaches in the northern islands are the most stunning.

Day 5

Keep your Day 5 for a full day at the beach, experiencing some of the most fun activities, or just to lie at the beach. Head to Trou-aux-Biches, to experience a deep-sea submarine drive, and have an experience of a lifetime witnessing the rich Mauritian marine fauna and a very cool shipwreck site. On completing a 45-minute underwater submarine journey, you will be even awarded a certificate!

Day 6

Day 6:

Keep the whole day reserved for Port Louis, the administrative and business capital of the island, which is located on the Northwest Coast. Port Louis is full of cultural and historical treasures that should not be missed. Visit the Central Market for shopping and also for some eating around, followed by the historic Champ de Mars, the oldest race course in the southern hemisphere, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Aapravasi Ghat, which honours thousands of indentured labourers who arrived from India after the abolition of slavery and who finally settled on the island. You can also visit The Caudan Waterfront, a must for those looking for the top designer brands at bargain prices. At this lively seafront, you will also find numerous restaurants serving a wide range of cuisines.

Day 7

Get a late flight in the evening, so you can have half the day exploring some other gorgeous parts of the island as well. Check out early, and head for Rhumerie de Chamarel, set amidst the vast hillside plantations of Chamarel. This working distillery doubles as a museum and a wonderful guide will show you the whole rum-making process in the most fun and interactive way. You also get to do a bit of rum tasting post the show around. You can have your lunch at the museum's restaurant, which specializes in a unique cuisine, prepared with local products sourced from the estate itself.

If you are more activity-driven, visit Chamarel's natural park La Vallee de Couleurs, an exotic wonderland that houses the unique 23-couloured earth. You can hike up to the waterfall in front of the coloured earth site, or you can take a quad bike uphill, which is more fun. Go for the 1.5 km long zip-lining experience, 70 m above the ground. Followed by a filling lunch, you can then head towards the central region before reaching east for the airport.

Visit Trou aux Cerfs, the most famous dormant volcano in Mauritius. From there, you have a fantastic 360° view of the high plateau of the island. Post the hill point, you can go to Grand Bassin, also known as Ganga Talao. This beautiful natural lake is formed inside the crater of an extinct volcano and is the renowned pilgrimage site for Hindu. Once you spot the gigantic Shiva and Parvati statues, you know you're there. Now, you have enough time to reach the airport 2 hours before departure. If your web check-in is already done, getting the boarding pass, immigration and baggage scan will be done in no time and you can enjoy your time in the Duty Free stores before boarding.
