Amidst the lush green teak forests of the Terai region of North Uttar Pradesh, close to the border of Nepal, is a haven for wildlife. Situated on the bank of Saryu river in Bahraich, Katarnia Valley is the ideal location for a thriving flora and fauna.

Katarnia Ghat protected as a Wildlife Sanctuary, is a part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. Tremendous efforts to protect the tigers has brought their population to 20 in an area of 400 square kilometres, ensuring a high probability to spot a tiger on a small safari. This safari would take you through dense forests, grasslands and swamps where you can spot more than just the tigers.

What to see here?

The Terai region in southern Nepal and northern part of the Ganga drainage basin in India is rich with fertile soil and abundant water for plants and animals to thrive well. Some of the animals that are found here are gharial, tiger, rhino, Gangetic dolphin, swamp deer, hispid hare, Bengal florican, the white-backed and long-billed vultures and a variety of exotic snakes.

How to reach ?

By Air:

The nearest airport is at Lucknow (215 km). From here you can hire a cab to Katarnia Ghat. The journey takes about six hours.

By Rail:

The nearest major railhead is at Lakhimpur (70 km). You will need to arrange a private cab from here to the sanctuary. The nearest rail-head is at Nishangada, right next to the sanctuary. However, only local trains run to this station from Bahraich.

By Road:

If you are driving, you will need to reach Lucknow, from where you can drive further to Lakhimpur and then to Nishangara.
