Situated on the slopes of the Jalapahar Hill, Peace Pagoda is a symbol of peace and unity in Darjeeling. The pagoda is counted among the popular landmarks of the destination. Its foundation stone was laid by Nichidatsu Fujii, a revered monk from Japan, who founded the 'Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Order'.  Inside the pagoda, there are four iridescent, gold-polished statues of Lord Buddha. The walls are adorned with eight sandstone carvings that depict stories of various stages of Gautama Buddha’s life. The divinity of the place is elevated by the chanting of the mantra ‘Nam Myoho Renge Kyo’ by monks.  Measuring 94 feet in height and about 23 metres in diameter, the pagoda is the highest free standing structure in Darjeeling. From the top of this white pagoda, visitors can behold breathtaking views of Darjeeling’s lush landscape along with the distant Kanchenjunga Range.
