Surrounded by lush green trees Bentota is a beautiful beach town and is a best place to enjoy peace and adore the nature along the beach. I planned my trip to Srilanka and spent a couple of days in Bentota upon recommendation of a friend. I have visited several beaches in India and other South-Asian countries but to my surprise Bentota is among the best and most beautiful beaches I have visited. Best time to visit Bentota is October to March wherein the temperature is cooler and humidity is less. However, I travelled Srilanka in May when the temperature and humidity was on higher side but the rains where much of delight and relaxing.
Bentota is situated 65 kilometer south of National Capital Colombo. It can be reached via Galle main road as well as the Colombo-Galle-Matara Southern Railway line. Bentota is located mid-way to Galle and Colombo. You can also hire cabs from the airport or from the Colombo bus stand. There are AC buses with direct services to Alugthama, Bentota, and Galle which you can take. I took a train to Bentota from Colombo fort railway station and I was amazed to see the long stretch of railway along the beach starting just after Colombo. Bentota has beautiful beach resorts and hotels too. It gives you a flexibility to select the stay as per the budget. After a beautiful train journey from Colombo fort I got down at Bentota railway station and checked into Temple Tree Resort which is located in the Colombo Galle Highway few kilometers from the Railway station. Temple Tree Resort is a beautiful beach resort hotel with private beach area and beach facing swimming pool and rooms. This resort has a beautiful dining area and provides Coastal, Indian, Chinese, and American food. The bar is along the swimming pool wherein you can relax with the view of Indian Ocean.
Bentota beach is a long stretch of white sand with some of the finest beach hotels and resort but was less crowded during our stay which was fine for me. With fewer tourists you can relax and can take opportunity to photograph the view. Other activities like snorkeling, canoeing, diving, windsurfing, and jet-skiing can be done with the help of locally operated tour agencies. Bentota Ganga is a river in this beach town which flows in Indian Ocean and provides best river safaris available.
Alugthama a town near Bentota is situated in southern bank of Bentota Ganga. If in Bentota you cannot give a miss to Aluthgama Kande Viharaya temple. This Buddhist temple has one of the tallest sitting Buddha statue in the world. The temple compound also has a temple of lord Vishnu, a Hindu god. I stayed in Bentota for 3 days wherein I enjoyed two surreal sunsets, explored this pretty little town, and also learned the history of Galle town.
I rate travelling this beach town as fully satisfying. This is a place for both luxury and budget travel. Bentota offers lots of places to visit, relax, and also have adrenaline rush with the water activities. This is a place of history and people around are happy to help. There are few Indian restaurants too on Galle Highway wherein you can enjoy you favorite cousines.
I enjoyed my stay at Bentota. I hope to come back here soon again!!
