What image comes to your mind when we talk about Bihar? A large majority of us may not consider it a place to plan travel to. I too, harboured such notions prior to my visit to the state, but I accept that I was both misinformed and biased.

And while this cradle of history, the erstwhile mighty kingdom of Magadha has several attractions to draw the travellers, the Government continues to take initiatives to boost tourism in the state.

And now, Bihar is the second only state, after Sikkim to have a skywalk. An 85ft long glass skywalk bridge has been built, in Rajgir (Nalanda district), which is slated to be inaugurated in 2021. The glass bridge, set amid five hills, is just the thrill that adventure seekers are looking for. The state government is hoping to attract domestic and international tourists through this initiative. Built on the lines of China’s Hangzhou glass bridge, this bridge will accommodate upto 40 persons at a time.

This destination being developed includes a jungle safari and a ropeway as well. The safari goes into the dense forests of Rajgir, while the ropeway is slated to have 18 glass covered cabins, each with a capacity of 8 persons. The ropeway will cover a distance of 750m in 5 mins. Alongside this the government is also building other adventure activities like air cycling for the adrenaline junkies.

Nalanda district is one of the tourist centres of Bihar. The principal destination being the ruins of the Nalanda University, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Coupled with Rajgir (an ancient capital city of Magadha linked back to the times of Gautama Buddha and Lord Mahavir) and Pawapuri (the place where Lord Mahavir attained nirvana), this forms a tourist triangle. About 95 kms from the capital Patna, Rajgir is visited by travellers and worshippers from several countries, primarily the Buddhists from South East Asia, who travel to BodhGaya, Rajgir, Vaishali and Nalanda.

And once you’re done with the adrenaline rush on the glass bridge, you could channelise your internal peace and quiet at the epitome of peace and spirituality, the Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya. Read about my BodhGaya experience here.
