1. Gaganachukki Waterfalls, Mandya, Karnataka

The eastern branch of the waterfall is known as Barachukki while the western branch is known as Gaganachukki. Together, they are known as the Shivanasamudra Falls.

Gaganachukki cascades down a height of 98 m and this gorgeous waterfall is where Asia's first hydroelectric power station was set up in the year 1905.

The waterfalls are located at a distance of about 139 km from Bangalore and about 60 km from Mysore.

2. Mallalli Waterfalls, Kodagu, Karnataka

At the foothills of Pushpagiri, around 25 km from Somwarpet, Kumaradhara river falls from over 200 feet to form the Mallallai falls. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Karnataka and the view from here is spectacular with lush green mountains around and steep valleys.

The waterfalls are located at a distance of about 256 km from Bangalore.

3. Chunchi Waterfalls, Kanakapura, Karnataka

Around 90 km from Bangalore, Chunchi Falls is in Kanakapura, Karnataka. It is famous for being the last spot before the river Arkavati’s confluence at Sangam. The sight of the water gushing down into a series of cascades will definitely leave you spellbound.

You will have do a bit of rock climbing or crawling, to get to the falls. The best part about Chunchi Falls is that it’s not one of those crowded waterfalls in India. So, get rolling to explore this splendid place of natural beauty and adventure.

4. The Elephant Falls, Upper Shillong, Meghalaya

The original Khasi name for the falls was ‘Ka kshaid lai pateng khohsiew’ (three steps waterfalls), because the falls actually consisted of three sections in succession.

Elephant Falls in Meghalaya solely holds the attraction of Upper Shillong. Especially in the rainy season.

Elephant Falls is located about 12km from the busy city of Shillong.

5. Thommankuthu Waterfalls, Thodupuzha, Kerala

If you are a nature lover or an adventure seeker, Thommankuthu waterfall destination is just the right place for you.

It is believed that the waterfall was named after the great hunter, Thommachen Kuruvinakunnel, who discovered this beautiful waterfall in the jungle in the late 1920s.

Located 17 km from Thodupuzha in Idukki district of Kerala, the main attraction of the river (Kannadiyaru) is the chain of waterfalls and mysterious caves.

6. Kempty Waterfall, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

Surrounded by high mountain cliffs and situated at an height of about 4,500 feet above sea level, Kempty Falls is easily the most famous waterfall in Uttarakhand. It is believed that the name ‘Kempty’ is a derivation of the ‘Camp-Tea’, the tea parties that the British used to organise here.

Located around 15 km from Mussoorie, you can either reach here by taking a cab or a tourist bus.

7. Athirappilly Waterfall, Thrissur, Kerala

Perched high above in the Sholayar forest ranges on the fringes of Kerala's famed rainforests, Athirappilly Waterfalls is considered to be one of the best waterfalls in India. At Athirappilly Falls, the water surges around big rocks and cascades down in three separate plumes.

Athirappally Waterfalls is located 78 kms from Kochi, at the entrance to the Sholayar ranges.

8. Nohkalikai Waterfall, Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

With a spot firmly etched on the list of the best waterfalls of India, the name of the falls in Khasi language means "Jump of Ka Likai" and is linked to a legend about a local woman Likai, who jumped off the cliff next to the falls. Nohkalikai Falls is categorised as a plunge waterfall, which means that the water loses contact with the rock as it pours over a cliff on the edge of the Himalayas. The tallest of its kind in India, Nohkalikai is fed by rainwater collected in the forested plateau above, so its volume changes dramatically according to the time of year.

9. Hogenakkal Waterfall, Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu

Known as the 'Niagara of India', Hogenakkal Fall is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu. The word Hogenakkal is formed of two Kannada words hoge and kal. When the water falls on the rocks it appears as if hoge (smoke) is emanating from the top of the kal (rock) because of the force of the water, hence Hogenakkal. One of the more majestic waterfalls in India, people flock to the Hogenakkal waterfall to gaze at its magnificence.

It is located in the Dharmapuri district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, about 180 km from Bangalore and 46 km from Dharmapuri town.

10. Jog Waterfall, Sagara taluk, Karnataka

Jog Falls, created by the River Sharavathi, falling from a height of 253 metres (829 feet), is one of the highest waterfalls in India. It is also called Gersoppa Falls or Jogada Gundi.

The falls are located on the Uttara Kannada and Sagara border.
