Feast of light for our eyes and soul - The phrase may seem a bit cliched to you. But when you get a glimpse of the grand Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple at Thiruvananthapuram when the majestic structure gets decked out with Lakshadeepam, you will feel renewed.

This event of decorating the temple with lights is held once in six years as the culminating ritual of Murajapam(means chanting mantras in turn), a 56 day- long chanting of sacred verses. On this day, the images of Lord Padmanabha, Lord Narasimha and Lord Krishna are taken out on Garudavahana (the mythological eagle which is the vehicle of Lord Vishnu) in a grand procession. The entire temple premises was lit up and the temple towers colourfully illuminated as part of Lakshadeepam. I felt blessed for getting the opportunity to see and experience the lakshadeepam in the last year(2014)..The ambience in the temple will take you to some other world..

An enchanting hill resort 61 km from Trivandrum city, offers excellent opportunities for trekking.

Good refreshment for body and mind. A deer park, just 3 km from the resort, is also worth a visit. Golden Valley, on the way to Ponmudi, is popular as an ideal place for bathing in the cool, clear mountain stream splashing down the rocks. One can also find natural springs, flowering trees and orchids quite in abundance here.

Ponmudi is connected to Trivandrum by a narrow winding road offering scenic views on the way to Ponmudi. The climate is pleasant year-round.

Located 51 km north of Trivandrum city, Varkala is a calm and quiet hamlet with several places of tourist interests. It is definitely one of the most frequented places to visit near Trivandrum.

Perched almost perilously along the edge of 15m-high red laterite cliffs, the resort of Varkala has a naturally beautiful setting and the cliff-top stretch has steadily grown into Kerala's most popular backpacker hangout. A small strand of beach nuzzles Varkala’s cliff edge, where restaurants play innocuous trance music and stalls sell T-shirts, baggy trousers and silver jewellery.

A dip in the waters here purges the body of impurities and the soul of all sins.

It's touristy and the sales pitch can be tiring, but Varkala is still a great place to watch the days slowly turn into weeks, and it's not hard to escape the crowds further north or south where the beaches are cleaner and quieter.
