When I was planning a trip to Malaysia I was sure to add Ipoh to my list. Only and only because of one reason - Lake Cermin, also called the Mirror Lake and aptly so.

Ipoh is known for its cave temples that are built inside all the limestone cliffs surrounding the city. What may look like a regular Buddhist temple from the outside is a deep gorgeous cave inside.

Another highlight are the three concubine lanes of the Ipoh old town. According to the history, a mining tycoon gave three lanes, one each, to his wife and his two concubines as gifts. Hale Lane, Concubine Lane and the Market Lane are the names given to each lane, the wife lane, the first concubine lane and the second concubine lane respectively. The Concubine Lane is the busiest amongst the three lanes with hip cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and hotels. The Hale Lane is surprisingly short and isolated, not something you would expect from a lane gifted to a wife. The Market Lane is adorned with beautiful murals and umbrellas.

The city also boasts a Mural Art Lane with murals from renowned and talented Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic.

And now the reason I planned a trip to Ipoh, Lake Cermin, also known as the Mirror Lake, which is still unknown to many. This hidden lake is surrounded by limestone and makes it an idyllic spot. With dusty roads and no proper route map to the lake, I never thought that such a picturesque lake would be waiting on the other side of a long dark tunnel (literally).

Apart from the sightseeing options, Ipoh has some great food options, from the famous Ipoh's White Coffee to a delicious bowl of Asam Laksa to the silkiest Caramel Custard you’ll ever taste, Ipoh has it all. Additionally, I also tried Wantan Mee, Hokkadio Ice Cream Puff, Frozen Beer and Ais Kachang.

With amazing history, sightseeing options and finger-licking food, make sure you add this jewel to your itinerary whenever you plan a trip to Malaysia.

Ipoh is a city in northwestern part of Malaysia, about 180 Kms from Kuala Lampur, that also serves as a gateway to the famous Cameroon Highlands. A city that was famous during the 19th century for tin mining is now a relaxed, lazy city with some amazing food and sightseeing options.
