Day 1

Every year in the last week of November we friends plan a trip which is the biggest trip of the year apart from other short trip on our bullets (now Interceptor) and car (i20) but planning a trip is always a chaotic scene. My friends are always dependable on me to plan right from location to entire itinerary of the trip. In all this chaotic process 2 of my best people (my girlfriend Prachi & my brother from another mother Sachin) are always with me even if others dont turn up.

So as usual the chaos started from the month of August. Where to go? What to do?. I had to speak to everyone personally to know what is their opinion about deciding a place. So initially we all planned for Goa (as usual) but still there was a confusion about what to do in Goa? How many days? Where all to visit? In all of this calender turned its page to the Month of November but still we had not finalized any place. No bookings commenced and also it was the week of Royal Enfield Rider Mania so already almost every good hotel was booked.

Finally, after lot of conversations, whatsapp chats etc. It was mutually decided to drop the plan and go some other day but still I was not convinced to drop the November plan as it has always been the month of a long vacation for us for last 7-8 years. So Prachi and Sachin said ' you decide where to go what to do we both will come anywhere you take us. Hence I decided to do a Coastal Trip of our beautiful Konkan belt. Planning started 3 days before the trip day and I was sitting for hours calculating everything right from how to go? where to go? How much budget? Finally I came up with the plan and decided to take out our bikes to go on this adventurous trip. Our plan was not to leave the coast as much possible as the roads allows us. We decided that we shall leave on 22nd November at late afternoon and reach satara and rest for the night and then again for next day we continue through kolhapur to get down in konkan and start our journey from there. Suddenly on 21st November Sachin was having very high fever which made us to drop the plan but again on 22nd afternoon as he felt better, he asked me, Shashank Let's go. Fever can wait. Hence again we decided to drop the bike plan and continue our adventure by car and all of sudden, in all this chaos we were on our way to konkan through.

We started from Mumbai Central, my home. We then picked up Prachi from Nerul and continued further. We decided that I shall drive entire night and reach Konkan in the morning.

We continued our journey. The climate was not too cold as we were expecting so we had a pleasant car ride. Still, after working in office for entire day running in the courts here and there ( I, being a Lawyer by profession), I too was very tired and I also could not control my sleep hence we just stopped at a petrol pump at Satara and I had a good 1 hour nap which was refreshing also along with this nap, Chai and Coffee came as complementary at every stop after couple of hours to get relaxed.

Finlly at about 3 AM, we reached near Karad toll plaza. Kolhpaur was still far. The google maps showing the route through Gaganbawda and Radhanagari which we were following. After crossing Toll Plaza I wanted to take a break and have coffee so I parked the car aside and went to the tea/coffee stall to have a cup of coffee. Sachin and Prachi both were in their respective dream world. While having coffee I had a small chat about the route with the stall owner and he told me how bad both the roads have turned after rains and he told me not to go that far and instead take the route from Malkapur. After having coffee and streatching bit, I came back to the car and told Sachin about my conversation with the stall owner. He was listening in sleep and I saw him nodding while still asleep and then I continued on the way to Malkapur. We continued through the route and reached Malkapur. Upon asking direction to Autowala, he told us to continue to Talawade through Warul and take right at Talawade as if we go straight, we enters Amba ghat which would take us to Lanja and again a long way to reach Tal- Konkan. Hence we took right from Talawade and again stopped to ask direction. One tea stall owner who also offered us tea complementary told us that go from Anuskura which is faster and takes you to Malvan but also he told about how dangerous and vertical this Ghat is and upon reaching we realized what he told us. The Ghat is really thrilling, very narrow single lane road, vertical nature of the Ghat but also scenic as you can see into picture.

Day 2

Then after crossing Anuskura Ghat we reached Kankavli at about 9AM and decides to have quick breakfast being Misal Paav, Shira and Kat- Wada Paav. After having breakfast and getting fresh, we continued towards our first destination through Oros and Parule and we reached our destination Devbag Sangam Beach.

We had booked our first stay a day before through Make My Trip being Sunshine Resort. To our surprise upon reaching, we were their very first booking through Make My Trip. The Host of the resort Vipin is very cooperative and kind. First he allotted us the room on the first floor on the other side of the beach but upon requesting he made quick arrangements and shifted us to ground floor on the beach side. The place is awesome and very near to Sangam beach which is the sangam of the sea and back waters. Devbag is surrounded by sea from both sides hence its beauty is at different level.

This was the beginning of Fish Mania. The host was working as cook in the Four Season, Worli but left and started his own Venture. He is an awesome cook. The fish he cooked in Konkani style was finger licking good and the climax being Solkadi was bang on. Our stomachs were full but our heart still craving for more. We decided not to search for food anywhere and tell Vipin to cook for us again. I want to tell you all that if you ever visit Devbag but staying anywhere else, please try food from Sunshine Resort hosted by Vipin. You will not be disappointed. After having our lunch we took a small nap and continued taking stroll around the beach till the sunset. The cool breeze from the sea and soft sand is mesmerizing.

Next morning we took another stroll to the beach and then also visited the Sangam point the Tsunami Island which was created naturally after 2003 Tsunami across the world. This place is also known as Seagull beach as all you can spot is Seagulls. We were lucky to witness one of the best national level open water swimming competition as it was the day of annual swimming competition which is held every year at Devbag where the swimmers have to relay for 4 rounds of the Tsunami Island. We were so awestruck by the level of intensity that we just forgot to click picture. Its very hard to swim in the open ocean and here you can see children as young as 4years old taking part in this competition. It is said some of the best memories are not captured by camera but by heart. Same with this moment. After witnessing such intense competition, we checked out from the Hotel and continued our  further journey to Malvan and Sindhudurg.
We went to Malvan beach for sometime to take stroll and then continued our journey to visit Sindhudurg Fort.
The Sindhudurg fort was built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to make the Swaraj strong on the Coast Line of the Maharshtra. Which still stands to the test of time. This fort still tells the heritage and history through its rock solid structure. We were awe struck to see how this fort was built by Maharaj at that time when no modern equipments were available but even after more than 300 years, the fort is still standing strong. Maharaj had as many as more than 300 forts but most of them are ruined but this fort is one of the well kept fort.
After visiting the Sindhudurg Fort, we continued to Chiwla beach and then to Kolamb beach which are also serene. Having a very little time we spent few minutes to admire the beauty and the again continued to Sarjekot Fort. This fort was built by Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as a strategic position in the Arabian Sea which now lies in very bad condition. Later on we also wanted to take ferry ride through Sarjekot but to our disappointment, cars were not allowed on the ferry. So we had to take the internal road to continue the beach search towards Talashil and Tondavali beaches. We never wanted to leave the Beachside so we continued along the coast and continued our journey towards Munage beach and Mithbav and later on we continued our adventure towards Kunkeshwar and Mithmumbari beach. It was still morning time and we were so determined to stick to the coast we continued further to Taramumbari to reach Devgad.
Devgad is one of the famous spot especially famous for its Alfonso but that's the least Devgad is also famous for the Devgad Fort but our phones were dead so we couldn't take pictures and just visited fort capturing it in our hearts. After we got back into the car we kept our phones for charging and decided to purchase Khaja, Ladoo etc.

After a small shopping schedule we continued to Padawane beach and Girye beach to reach to Mighty Vijaydurg. It is one of the oldest fort being built in the 11th century. This is one of the 3 forts having Khalbatkhana where important meetings were held by Maharaj, the other two being Raigad and Rajgad being the capital city of Swarajya.

This is a very confusing fort as the entrance of the fort cannot be seen by enemies hence the fort cannot be penetrated. There are still canon marks visible fired by the enemy only to fail to find entrance and being attacked by our brave Mavle from the other side. Vijaydurg has also witnessed to the discovery of Helium gas so this fort also fondly known as "Helium che Palnaghar".

After being exhausted exploring the mighty Vijaydurg we were hungry and wanted to have lunch and found a very good place called Hotel Mayuri. This place is awesome run by a mid-aged couple. Their speciality is "Chuli varche Jevan" means food cooked on burner made from bricks and soil and fueled by woods. The food is awesome cooked in authentic Konkani style. Best part is that rice and gravy is unlimited without which Konkani food is incomplete.

After stomach being filled fully we had to leave the place with heavy heart as we still were craving for fish. We continued our journey to Ambolgad and towards Purnagad. Ambolgad is the nearest place to Jaitapur Nuclear Project. We could not find any good place at the beach side so we decided to continue our journey as we were heading for 3rd fort of the day being Purnagad.

There not a lot know about Purnagad. Difference of opinion about who built it. Villagers says it was built by Maratha Admiral Kanhoji Angre. Some believe that it was built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is in very bad condition and is under complete renovation so we could not click picture as workers were busy in their respective work from all sides. We had reached Purnagad by 5.30PM and it started getting dark. The steps towards the entry point of the fort are tricky and goes through entire village. One has to climb 200 steps to reach to its entrance.

After spending some time at the fort imagining its glorious past, we left the fort at about 7PM. It was already dark by then so we decided to get down and continue journey and halt at Bhatye beach and we called it a day after getting a good hotel on Oyo for stay at Bhatye beach.

A calm evening

Day 3

Then having a good sleep and rest, we continued further at early morning at about 6AM. We left bhatye and in no time we reached Ratnagiri. We wanted to visit Thiba Palace but we could not visit as it was just 6.45 AM and lot of time for Palace to open up. Hence with disappointment, we decided to go on with the journey so we continued our journey through Shirgao mangroves towards Aarey Warey beach. We were lucky to witness sunrise at Aarey warey. After seeing sunrise we continued again towards coast side through Bhandarpule beach route to visit Ganpatipule.

At about 7.30 AM, we reached Ganpatipule. Less crowded at morning time and we could get nice darshan and spent sometime at the temple area. Then we also had our breakfast at Ganpatipule beach and then continued further. We had to continue from inner road as no beach side roads in this part but good thing is that we also could visit the village of one of the famous Marathi Poet fondly know by all as "Keshavsoot" in Malgund. After spending couple of minutes there we headed towards Malgund beach and our beach search continues. We continued from Bhandarwada towards Choughule beach at Kachare and then quick visit to Nandivade beach and then to catch our first Ferry being Jaigad Ferry to Tawsal. On our way to ferry we saw sign board pointing straight to Jaigad so we decided to visit Jaigad fort first.

This fort is in ruins but still outer wall are standing strong. This fort was built somewhere in 13th Century.

After quick visit to the fort we caught our first ferry ride for which we spent about Rs. 170 including car's ticket.

After getting down from jetty, we continued towards Velneshwar beach. The beach is very clean and calm. We spent couple of minutes there and headed for Guhagar. The roads are very small here which makes even a Nano passing difficult and in such narrow roads we were stuck in between as in one of the village, the bus of State Transport stopped working at one turning point which also led to bring everything to halt. The bus neither could go ahead nor could come back as the driver in haste, changed the gears from 4th to 1st while led to lock the entire engine. The conducter went to Guhagar bus depot to get mechanic which was still about 10kms far. After half an hour mechanic arrived and it took about 1.30 hours to resolve the problem. We already wasted lot of time as we couldn't go back as going from another route was a bad idea as it was a long journey of about 35kms to Guhagar whereby from current route it was only 10kms and more so we didn't want to leave beach side. After the road was cleared we went ahead to Guhagar beach to just spend sometime as we had wasted a big chunk of time and we wanted to catch the 2nd Ferry being Dabhol - Dhopve ferry. The 2nd ferry also costed same as earlier ones. The ferry service saves time and fuel. Suvarnadurg company operates all ferries for which timings are also fixed and they are never late unlike our mumbai local trains.

After we got down from The ferry we continued towards beach side again and passed through Kolthare beach to reach Ladghar which is also known as Tamastirth. Tamas means redish brown. As the name suggests the water in this side of the sea is brown in color naturally. To our utter shock the beach was totally empty with no resort running. They told us that we came in weekday so everything is shut. We were dead hungry as it was past 2.30PM so we decided to go ahead. We passed through Karde beach, Murud beach of Ratnagiri and Palande beach to reach Harnai beach. We decided to have lunch at Harnai beach but as it was 3.30 PM and almost all the hotels were shut and would open at dinner time. But on the internal road we found one Hotel Malti run By a muslim couple. They saw our tired and hungry faces and welcomed us and again cooked fresh food. The taste was very different the usual Konkani food having their own Muslim touch on which we went gaga. Delicious food again with happy ending of chilled Solkadi.

After heavy lunch we were still confused what is to be done as we were running behind schedule because of breakdown of the bus in the middle of the road. We decided to take little risk to see where we reach. We continued to Anjarle beach and then to Padle beach to spend couple minutes on each beach. We also visited Kelshi beach where the sand is pink and headed further. Already behind the planned schedule we somehow reached Veshvi to catch next ferry being Veshvi - Bagmandla ferry. It was 7PM and the ferry was at 7.30PM. Meanwhile we were deciding whether to stay somewhere or to take risk and continue and try reaching Murud Janjira.

We inquired at the Ticket counter for the ferry timings from Dighi to Agardanda. The ticket distributor was kind enough to directly call the ferry driver and exchange our number to be in touch with him. The last ferry from Dighi to Agardanda was at 8.30PM. We decided to risk it and continued towards Harihareshwar once we got down at Bagmandla. By this time it was dark already we couldn't take good pictures. We then continued for Shrivardhan and left in sometime towards Diveagar and after spending sometime there we continued for Dighi. It was already 8PM and ETA shown on google maps to reach Dighi from Shrivardhan was 8.37PM. We were tensed and I became Dominic Torreto to reach anyhow before the last ferry as we are risking everything. If we miss ferry then its a 100kms road to reach Murud. To our utter disappointment and more difficulties, roads were its worst and that too at night at about 8PM. Still we didnt give up and somehow managed to reach just a minute earlier to catch ferry.

We were relieved. The ferry driver recognised us because he knew already we are coming he asked me that I had called him from Veshvi jetty and told me since it was last ferry I would have waited couple of minutes for you but how to tell this guy now that I dont have satellite phone and there's no network on coastal side except for Idea and little for Vodafone.

The last ferry left the jetty only with our car 1 mini tempo and a bike. At 8.45 we reached Agardanda.

We then booked a hotel through oyo at Murud but near Janjira ferry as we wanted to visit Janjira next day morning. We were tired but also happy that we made it and because we made it we get to sleep little more till 9AM instead of starting early morning.

We were proud of ourselves that we made it. This was the thrilling part of the entire trip.

Day 4

Next day we got up at 9.30 AM and got ready to visit Murud Janjira but upon reaching there it was utter disappointment that the boat was not leaving as there was not much crowd. It being a middle day being Tuesday we had to wait till some people comes. We decided to have breakfast there and ordered Omelette. At about 11.30AM groups of people started coming and the boat left for the fort at about 12PM.

Murud Janjira is another mesmerizing fort being famously known as unconquered fort till date. The fort is so strong and having India's 3rd heaviest Canon named Kalalbangdi. The first being at Vijapur, second being at Devgiri. The fort is in great condition till date. One can also see Padmadurg also known as Kasa Fort. built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in order to capture Janjira but all the attempts were failed. After the fort we headed back to home. On our way back we also visited Siddhi Palace which is shut completely as the people would stole historic artefacts. Hence we just could take picture from outside and left further for Alibaug city. We had our final lunch of this adventurous trip at Alibaug city at Hotel Sanman Gomantak. A delicious hotel and ended with another big glass of Solkadi for each one of us. We reached back at Mumbai at about 6PM in evening marking end of the trip.

It was fun as we have not counted the number of beaches in total we visited, saw, passed from and also number of Ghats we crossed to stay on the beachside. Moreover the Anuskura ghat while coming from Kolhapur Malkapur Road.

We covered up 1122kms to be exact as on our odo meter. The trip to fish paradise being Our Konkan ended with leaving us to crave for more and we shall be back again on the same route but this time on our bikes.

It is pertinent to note that this roads are neither meant for car as they are very narrow and driving is risky also nor made for bikes as it is totally empty. You may spot 1 car only after 40-50 kms no nearby village for help if you are stuck with puncture or any other mechanical problem. Especially if you want to stick to coastal route without touching the main road or National Highway, you are ought to have company of 4-5 bikes along with you, otherwise it's a hell of a task as neither roads are good nor there's any network coverage for your rescue.

But apart from all this the Konkan is still mesmerising and a must visit ditching Goa and Gokarna etc.

As the Konkani people says " Yeva Konkan Aaplach Asa" means " Come, Konkan is yours only".
