Rajasthan is a place full of forts and some great architectures of the past. There are many significant cities in Rajasthan, but I tried to cover some of the major cities and some of the major holy sites. Pressed for time, this 5-day itinerary is the ultimate guide to cover the majority of the places economically.
1. Mt Abu –
I started off from Nagpur in train to Ahmedabad, then onto Abu road. From Abu road, I took a shared taxi directly to Mount Abu. On reaching, I enquired about the rates to cover the places and was delighted to know of a package, which covered 8 major points before dropping back at Nakki lake. I covered Dilwara temple, Guru Shikhar, Achalgarh village, Toad rock, Arbuda Devi, Somnath temple, Shooting point, Honeymoon point, Om Shanti Bhawan/ Pandav Bhawan, before being dropped off at Nakki Lake to enjoy the fireworks [I had been on Diwali]. I missed out on Trevors Tank in Abu.
2. Udaipur –
The next day early morning, I took a bus to Udaipur. On reaching I was searching for a package tour to cover the places In limited time. But due to high prices, I decided to cover them on my own. I Covered Lake Palace, City Palace, Bagore ki Haveli, Jagdish Temple, Lake Pichola, Jag Mandir Palace, Fateh Sagar Lake, Moti Magri, Sahelion ki Bari. Unfortunately, I missed out on my target list of places like Sajjangarh Palace, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Ek Ling Nath Ji.
3. Ajmer –
That night I boarded a late train to kill the need to book a room and have early morning prayer at Dargah. On reaching Ajmer, I immediately took a bath in the Railway station and went to Dargah Sharif to offer prayers. After touching Allah, I went to Ana Sagar Lake. I decided to skip any other places and went to pay homage at Pushkar to the creator.
4. Pushkar –
On reaching Pushkar Bus stand, I started off walking to the World’s Only temple of Lord Brahma. In between, I covered many temples of Old Rangji Temple, Apteshwar Temple, Paap Mochini Temple, Raghunath Temple, Atmeshwar Temple, Mahadeva Temple, Mai Gou Ghat, Siddhi Vinayak temple, Vishnu Temple, and Anasagar lake. I covered Pushkar Mela area, Pushkar Lake, Brahma Temple, Savitri Mandir by going in a ropeway to get a glimpse of the desert from above. I enjoyed the famous Malpua of Pushkar and made that my lunch. I finished Pushkar by afternoon and went off to Jodhpur.
5. Jodhpur –
As soon as I reached I rushed to cover the 3 major places on my list - Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, and Jaswant Thada. I covered everything in a rush before hitting the train for Jaisalmer.
6. Jaisalmer –
I reached late at night in Jaisalmer and stayed the night in the station. Early morning I went to Gadisar lake to enjoy the sunrise before venturing into the desert. I covered Jaisalmer Fort, Bara Bagh, Patwon-Ki-Haveli, Nathmal-ki-Haveli, Jain Temple, and Salim Singh Ki Haveli. Near Jaisalmer Fort, after rigorous bargaining, I booked a safari @ 1500. In the afternoon I caught the taxi which was to take us to the campsite. It included some spots in between and a camel ride during sunset. On reaching the campsite, we were welcomed grandiosely and then went on to see a live performance of some belly dancers while enjoying the buffet. After returning from the safari, I caught the train back to Jaipur.
7. Jaipur –
a. On reaching Jaipur, immediately went to cover the places on my list. I covered Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Amber Fort, Nahargarh Fort, Jantar Mantar, Jaigarh Fort, Jal Mahal, Birla temple and Chand Baori. All along I commuted through Metro or local bus. On finishing the tour, I went to catch the train to Delhi and then to Nagpur.
Some Points
1. Each place can be covered in a day.
2. Connectivity towards Jaisalmer is poor. So book the travel tickets before starting off.
3. Street food of Rajasthan gives a sense of being Indian, have a go at it.
4. Don’t miss out the Malpuas of Pushkar.
5. Jaisalmer is incomplete without Safari. So, don’t miss out.
6. Travel through local commute or by walk. Its the cheapest means to cover places.
