With the vacations upon us and the sweltering heat looming over the horizon, most of us have started pining for a trek to the hills, a trip to the beach or a lazy stay at a comfortable resort.

This quaint village in the French Alps has something for everyone – families, adventure enthusiasts, explorers and people who simply want to relax. Away from the bustling Paris, this splendid ski destination envelops you with its heady French charm and a little European flair.

Sights: Chamonix Valley is dotted with museums. Dedicated to agriculture and landscapes, visit the House of the Alpage (Maison de l’Alpage) located in the small commune of Servoz. Check out the year-round exhibition at the Alpine Museum. Learn a little about the art of mountaineering and the minerals sourced from the Mont Blanc Valley at Espace Tairraz - Crystal Museum.

Things to do: Travel on one of the retro tram carriages named Anne, Marie or Jeanne, on the Tramway du Mont-Blanc.

One of Europe’s most beautiful cities, enwrapped with rocky hills overlooking the sea, Edinburgh welcomes you with a skyline peppered with minarets and everyday buildings, sitting atop cliffs.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe takes place over a period of 12 days and is another reason to visit Edinburgh this June. While summer here is bustling with tourists, the inexpensive food, drinks and other activities in Edinburgh make up for it.

Sights: National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh Zoo, Edinburgh Castle, Royal Botanic Garden, The Scottish Parliament, Royal Yacht Britannia, Palace of Holyroodhouse, Scott Monument.

Things to Do: Get a taste of the local food movement at the Edinburgh Larder. Feast on Scottish hog roast at Oink and drink one of 200 whiskies at The Devil’s Advocate.

This volcanic island floating in the Tyrrhenian Sea, about 19 miles from the city of Naples is an alluring brew of thermal spas, volcanic mud and buried necropolises. The dreamy coastline is sprinkled with picture-perfect bays, beaches and coves and the mountain slopes adorned with olive groves and pine trees.

Sights: The Aragonese Castle, Sant'Angelo (fishing village in Serrara Fontana), Pilastri Aqueduct, La Mortella Gardens

Things to do: Go relax in any one of the 300 spas of the emerald island. Visit the 475 BC Fortress of Aragons or hike up to Mount Epomeo for chestnut forests and a panoramic view of Capri. For black sand beaches, pastel painted houses and winding cobbled streets, go to the island of Procida that is a short ferry ride away from Ischia.

Food: Seafood is a must try. Also, try the peculiar green liqueur rucolino, made from rocket (rucola) leaves, that tastes of liquorice.

The glamorous party island, in June, moves away from the bling and the epicurean crowds. And the Cycladic maze of land can be appreciated for its traditional white-washed architecture, the pelicans cruising by and the hushed everyday goings-on of the locals.

Sights: Mykonos Archaeological Museum, Delos Archaeological Museum, Delos Island, Elia Beach

Things to do: Camp by the Paraga Beach, dive into the crystal waters and explore the shipwrecks and the plethora of marine life.

Food: Feast on Greek classics such as moussaka, a baked dish made from eggplant and béchamel sauce, pastitsio, a Greek lasagna. Try Kopanisti, a Mykonos special, a cheese famous for its spicy, aromatic taste. And end with baklava.

Burlington is a vibrant little town in Vermont sitting on the shore of the aquamarine Lake Champlain with an illustrious history. Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Ben and Jerry Ice Cream, also hail from this town.

Sights: Waterfront Park, Shelburne Museum, The Intervale Center, Magic Hat Brewery, Church Street Market Place

Things to Do: Bike your way through the town’s old breweries such as the Alchemist and Hill Farmstead. Watch the sun go down behind the Adirondacks mountains across Lake Champlain.

Sights: Greenway (the summer home to Agatha Christie), Dartmoor (the Baskerville scape), Clovelly Historic Village, Lydford Gorge, Exeter Cathedral, Castle Drogo, Knightshayes Court, Plymouth Gin Distillery

Things to Do: Take a yacht to Dartmouth, sample wine from any one of the numerous vineries, take to the north coast for surfing, and the south coast for sailing.

Cycle the Exe Trail and Drake’s Way or spend a lazy afternoon in one of Devon’s many pubs.

Food: Gorge on scones and jam, with the Devonshire cream tea. Also try the local ice-creams made from clotted cream. The Cornish pasty is a must. So are the traditional ginger biscuits, called Cornish Fairings. As you walk back to your hotel, sip on some cider and get yourself some handmade fudge for the night.
