The Mauritshuis was first opened in 1875. Its namesake, The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius, was donated by the Hague collector A.A. des Tombe. In 1896, a wealthy Hague art dealer, Abraham Bredius, donated 25 paintings. In 1913, Sir Henri Deterding gave the Mauritshuis five Rembrandts.

The Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery was originally owned by the Dutch state, but was privatised in 1995. It was a private museum, so it is now owned by a foundation. The new owners would have the building connected to the former Societeit de Witte building. The renovation was finished in 2014. The planned expansion began in 2012. The Mauritshuis is a private museum, but the state leases the adjacent Societeit de Witte building for the art museum.
