Kaziranga National Park - What to expect from the jungle safaris in the wild?

There is something about the jungles that has always attracted us. It is the peace, nature, wildlife or even the serenity and silence that pulls us towards it. We have been to a few national parks in the past but Kaziranga National Park in Assam has always been on our list of places to visit. While we were on a trip to Assam recently to attend the Rongali Festival in Guwahati, we also had a visit to Kaziranga planned in the itinerary.

Our itinerary was prepared by the Koyeli Tours and Travels who are undoubtedly the best in the business when it comes to organizing trips in the North Eastern part of India. Although we have read a lot of good things about the jungle safaris in Kaziranga, experiencing it first hand was altogether a different ball game. Be it the jeep safari or the elephant safari each has its charm for all age groups. With specific timings for the safaris to the dos and dont's when in the national park, let's take you on a journey through Kaziranga National Park - what to expect from the jungle safaris in the wild!

The drive from Guwahati to Kaziranga:

Kaziranga National Park is located at a distance of almost 200kms from Guwahati and can be reached in almost 4 hours via NH27. The drive from Guwahati to Kaziranga is soothing to the eyes with overhanging trees on both sides of the road. The road conditions are pretty good and the traffic is also light on this route.

Different Zones at the Kaziranga National Park:

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Center is divided into 3 different zones, each falling in a different district. The zones are named as Central, Western and Eastern based on their location. While the Central Zone and Western Zones are mostly preferred for safaris spotting the wild animals, the Eastern Zone is preferred for bird watching as it has numerous species of birds all around.

Types of Safaris at Kaziranga National Park:

The park offers two types of safaris for the visitors, the jeep safari and the elephant safari. The jeep safari has a driver, a guide along with 4 passengers in one jeep traversing through the jungle. This safari is 2 hours and we found it more comfortable than an elephant safari for photography. The elephant safari is of 45mins duration and has 3 passengers along with a mahout. During our jeep safari, we had Mr. Bhuwan as our guide from the Koyeli Tours who explained us about the park in detail. We were really happy to know the in-depth knowledge he had about the park and the different types of wild animals found there.

The elephant safari starts at 5:30 in the morning and the jeep safari starts at 7 in the morning. You need one-day advance booking for the elephant safari. Jeep Safari starts at 7 am in the morning and at 2 pm in the afternoon.

Best Time to visit the Kaziranga National Park:

The best time to visit the Kaziranga National Park is the winters! As the climate is dry between November to April, post-February burnout of the grass, the wild animals can be spotted more easily. The park remains closed from May to October every year fearing floods in the Brahmaputra river.

While staying at the Iora Resorts in Kaziranga, we went for a jeep safari twice. The first one was in the Central Zone on the day we reached Kaziranga. We were hoping to spot a tiger during it but couldn't. However, we were lucky enough to find some deer, bore, single-horned rhinoceros and a whole lot of different birds during our two hours journey.

My fellow blogger friends went for an early morning elephant safari the next day but I decided to give it a past. Primarily because I did not want to ride the poor animal and make him feel slaved. The second-day jeep safari in the Western Zone of the park was equally beautiful and we found so many rhinos roaming around in the park. There were few of them who even posed for us so well that we just loved them. The sunset from the corridor in the park was one thing you should never miss while you are there at Kaziranga.
