Delhi is a lot more than skyscrapers and cold workplaces. The capital is the richest when it comes to cultural heritage and hence businesses of all sizes have been welcomed since the beginning of time, and thankfully most traders have stayed and flourished. Today, I let out some more secrets of Delhi for you to go and explore on your own.
Here are 20 wholesale markets in Delhi that are known for dealing in a specific range of items only:
The most popular wholesale markets in Delhi for certain items
Books of every kind
If it has been printed, you can find it on Nayi Sadak. Whether it's an academic book or a mythological fiction, there is nothing you can't find here; you can even get pre-owned copies as well so they'll come cheap. You can sell your old books here too.
Counterfeit gaming consoles & CDs
The capital's underground market is infamous for finding all kinds of "underground" things. From fake sports jerseys to packed deodorant bottles filled only with water, this place has everything. But it originally attained infamy for dealing in the Chinese versions of otherwise expensive gaming gadgets.
Jeans of all shapes, sizes & brands
The largest of the wholesale markets in Delhi for denim clothes, Tank Road exports customised jeans to everywhere in the city and beyond. You can even name the brand tag you want stitched on the back of your pair and the sellers will readily oblige.
Women's street shopping
Sarojini Nagar is a haven for women, since it boasts of an outrageous variety of cheap clothes and accessories, and that too all within an area of one square kilometre. Bargain shamelessly here.
Laptop/desktop purchase and repair
A gadget freak's paradise, Nehru Place is the only pitstop for people looking to buy, sell, repair or assemble their laptops or desktops in Delhi/NCR. Some of the accessories on sale here are ridiculous, but always in demand.
Mobiles – Old, New and Chinese
What Nehru Place is for computers, Gaffar Market in Karol Bagh is for mobiles. But beware of leaving your mobile for repair here; shops are known to replace original parts.
If you have a wedding to organise or attend anywhere on earth, the Chandni Chowk cloth market is where you go to buy everything from cloth pieces to readymade garments. The Indian attire sold here is cheap and trendy, and the friendly shopkeepers are a bonus.
Cameras and everything related
If you are looking for the perfect camera for your travel endeavours, Kucha Chaudhary Market or simply Chandni Chowk's Photo Market is the be-all and end-all of all your camera and equipment needs.
Every spice and other things nice
Now that you have bought a camera, you might as well cover a bit more distance. Khari Baoli, near Chandni Chowk, is Asia's largest, also one of the best wholesale markets in Delhi, for spices and it'll be quite a subject for your camera.
Inexpensive western cafes
Want cold coffee and pizza, but don't feel like burning a deep hole in your pocket? Satya Niketan market is the place to be. Situated bang opposite the famous Venkateshwara College in Delhi University's South Campus, this place is filled with wonderful cafes serving world cuisine at prices fit for students.
Footwear for short and tall
This Tibetan settlement boasts of an outrageous variety (and quality) of replicas of branded footwear. Whether it's Nike, Adidas, Asics, Reebok, or another luxury brand, you can find a cheaper first copy of it here. The quality is decent as well.
Bicycles, bicycles everywhere!
If you're the kind who goes on anti-pollution campaigns at Connaught Place, then you need to buy yourself a good bicycle to prove that you really care about the environment. And Jhandewalan Cycle Market is where you should be headed.
Just outside the most renowned medical institution of India is a flurry of huge chemist shops that stock medicines you'll find nowhere else in the country. Even international medicines.
Everything about cars
If you wish to "pimp your ride" up to the next level, you need to drive down to Karol Bagh to realise what your car has been missing all this while. From sale/purchase of luxury cars to the weirdest accessories, spoil your automobile in this market.
Spectacles for the eye, pleasing to the eye
We're back to the alleys of Chandni Chowk with this one. The Ballimaran area of Old Delhi houses hundreds of shops – big and small – dealing in all kinds of basic and designer eyewear.
Flowers for your eternal Valentine
The D block of Chhattarpur is home to the biggest nurseries you'll ever come across, and every morning you'd see traders with flowers of all shapes and sizes selling them all over the street.
Set your kites and hearts free
Have you ever wondered where those huge kites, flown during every other Indian festival, come from? The answer is Lal Kuan. This place houses kite-smiths that have made a living out of just selling kites and nothing else for generations.
Chic fashion malls
If you're shopping for yourself and it's for a very special occasion, it's DLF Place and Select Citywalk malls in Saket where you should go for your latest fashion fix. With a host of luxury fashion brands all under a few roofs, you won't be disappointed one bit.
Chaat, tikki, golgappe... street food
Although you can get decent street food at every corner of the city, but Tilak Nagar is really special. Situated at the hub of the Punjabi-dominated West Delhi, the Tilak Nagar Market offers you some lip-smacking street food options that aren't available anywhere else.
