It happens very often when you’re strolling down the streets of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, and you happen upon a footbridge across the river.
And this is very often. Most cities have rivers run through them and there are some 2-3 bridges vonnncyiiboth sides of the city.Be it Paris, Switzerland, Budapest, Amsterdam! also it is extremely likely that you’ll see love locks clasped to the bridge’s fencing.
We came across this again on the Makartsteg Footbridge in Salzburg as we walked through this wonderful European city.
This years old tradition is that lovers inscribe a lock with their initials or names , lock it on some popular footbridge and then throw the keys in the deep waters.

Remarkably, this has become such a popular tradition that many cities around the world are struggling with what some call litter or vandalism on their most cherished and loved public walkways. Maintaining these structures has become a gruesome task!
Whether you view this practice as a romantic gesture, or as a popular form of vandalism, but is a wonderful place for snapping photographs and affixing new love locks to celebrate love.
Probably the click of the lock and the depth to which the keys sink into the river helps people understand the depth of their relationships.
However Paris city officials have started to remove locks fastened to one of the it's main bridges by lovers.
Tying a "love lock" on to the Pont des Arts before throwing the key into the River Seine beneath has become a tourist tradition in recent years.
But this had to be stopped after a part of the bridge's railings collapsed under the weight in around 2014
Vandalism or love expression form, it did add a very fairy tail like feeling to the Bridge. Colourful locks all around also make a great photo opportunity!
The bridge was beautiful but overcrowded because of tourists taking photographs all over. Saw many locals with rolling eyes at some cheesy couples
We didn't fasten locks on the bridge but did take some memorable and pretty photos !
