Kolkata becomes the first Indian metro to get a float metro inspired from the one at Bangkok. It was an attempt to relocate around 200 shopkeepers from a nearby market which was demolished for making space for the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass road.

Most of the boats will house two shops that will sell fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, grains, grocery, fish, meat, other products, etc. It will sell items of daily use.

Wooden walkways have been built for buyers to reach the boats. A walkway has also been built along the edge of the 2,000 square meter lake.

Many of the shopkeepers tell you stories about their time on land and just hope that they get more customers here as this floating market has become a crowd puller in Kolkata. Most of the essentials items have been sold here.
