The first thought that crosses your mind when you hear the name of Rajasthan is the princely state of the same name with a unique blend of ethnicity and culture. But when it comes to picking and choose amongst the most exquisitely and intricately carved places, trust me, it remains the most difficult task to do so.
"It's practically impossible to cover all the places in a single time bound trip. Can we just choose a few?"
I resorted to a smaller list of the lot and marked Mount Abu, Udaipur, and Chittorgarh to be my destinations for this particular 4 Day trip regretful of missing the other places of interest.
The easiest way to commute to Rajasthan from theNational Capital is by the road, be it your own vehicle, bus or train. The city of Palaces is situated at the western counterpart of the country and is outlined with the mountains making it one of the hottest place in the country thus the land of the golden soil.
Booking Your Trip
Booking well in advance isn't necessary for a trip to Rajasthan, booking even after arriving at the venue is more than enough. But an advance booking might not hurt that much owing to a moderate climatic pattern there is no off season for Rajasthan. A random search on the search engines or any leading trip planners would do.
A nominal costing for a trip to Rajasthan, specified places would include a budget of around 6000 plus INR for 4 days.
Best Time To Visit
Though Rajasthan is a favorable place all the year around, the best time to visit would be October- February as the climate remains favorable. The summers are scorching and the winters drop the mercury below level at certain parts of Rajasthan. I chose to travel in the month of January.
The Trip
Mount Abu
It was the predawn of a chilly winter morning, and our first stop of the trip – Abu Road was reached. It was as early as 4 o’clock in the morning when the train was deboarded and a public transport was hired to drive up the hill to Hotel Sunset Inn, Mount Abu. The morning at Mount Abu was celestial. With a blanket of stars surmounting us, we walked down from the bus to our hotel wrapped in blankets and mittens.
The hill station has to its highlights the Nakki Lake and its picturesque views. With a toad rock placed at a height to give an appearance of a Dinosaur’s head. Nearly a flight of over 12oo steps up, the highest point of Mount Abu, Toad Rock and its view. Magnificent is the word.
As rich as its culture, the next stop was the Dilwara temple which has been intricately designed by skilled artisans. The beauty and the detailing of the temple and the carvings on the pillars and the gates made it an artistic beauty. It is a combination of 5 temples
The next stop was the highest peak of Mount Abu, Guru Shikhar.
Situated at a height of 1722 m from the sea level, it takes a lot of steps to reach the place which inhabits a temple and a huge bell. It is the highest peak of the Aravali ranges and thus a view from the hilltop is naturally breathtakingly beautiful.
The last stop of the day had to incorporate the infamous Sunset point of Mount Abu. Sunset is one of the most beautiful phenomena of the world, and when you get to see it at the place where it sets in the west for the nation, it adds more charm to it. The exact time to see the sun dip into the clouds for the day is around 5 pm in the evening. Satisfyingly the hotel Sunset Inn is situated at a distance f 1.5 kms from the point. You'll end your day with the drop of the sun.
Udaipur
The next day you travel down the hill only to reach the beautiful city of lakes, Udaipur through any means of a public commute or as well it might be included in the trip package designed by the trip planner.It takes around 3 hours to 5 hours to reach Udaipur. I checked into Hotel Vishnupriya, Udaipur. Farely spacious rooms, good amenities and easy access to all places around Udaipur.
You can visit the City Palace, Udaipur as a part of the first itinerary at Udaipur. The history and art of the place and the lineages of the clan of the Sun gods. After the short visit to the city palace, a walk back to the hotel by passing the streets of Udaipur gave us time to explore the tastes of the Rajasthani culture and savoring of the rajasthani cuisine. The authentic culture of Rajasthan also had the influence on the items that flooded the markets.
The city is known as the City of Lakes as it sustains 4 lakes within itself. Best known as the place for their royal lineage and battles, Udaipur has a lot of places to visit in terms of historical monuments and palaces.
Chittorgarh
The very essence due to which the princely state of Rajasthan has been in talks is due to the valiance of the king Maharana Pratap. It is the birth place of this great king who had not only ruled the place but also the hearts of the courtiers of his palace.
The Fort of Chittorgarh is the place of birth of King Maharana Pratap. His ancestors reigned the place up to many generations. The fort has been structured in such a manner that there was a separate place of living, place of worship, royal bath and a lot more. The highlights of the fort remains the Vijay Stambh till date.
The single structure was a sign of 'Vijay' - Victory. It also was a watch tower which helped in viewing in all 360 degrees around the place for any enemies of that time. The place is neighbored by a piece of land which acted as a huge pit for immolation where back in the 1303, the infamous Rani Padmini, one of the prominent Queens of the lineage conducted 'Jauhar'. A ritual of self-immolation of queens and female royals of the Rajput kingdoms of Rajasthan in India, when facing defeat at the hands of an enemy. The place not only instills the devastated remains of the fort but also fills in a sense of loyalty towards one's own clan when the stories of the past are valued.
Thus increasing the essence of visiting the place, all the more.
Udaipur
Sight seeing at Udaipur includes visiting the lakes and also the major markets of the place which gives a hand to hand access the the local souvenirs of the city. The highlight of place remains the Maharana Pratap Samarak, situated right amidst Fateh Sagar Lake.
And the main market of Udaipur remains Bapu Market, where all souvenirs of the royal style can be brought. From ethnic jewelry to traditional drapes and dupattas. You have it all at the same place.
Even after containing so many diverse places near to each other and well connected, Rajasthan remains the most royal state out of all the others. Courtesy, the food, the travel, the living and the people around. Everything is as rich as one might expect and hence makes it one of the most memorable experiences as a part of the holiday. Getting back home after the trip fills up many pages of the unwritten diary of the memories. The essence, the authenticity and the aura of the place captivates the soul and the taste of Rajasthan lingers on the minds for longer than usual.
