International destinations you must visit in February
You must travel in February! Apart from it being touted as the month of love, owing to Valentine’s Day celebrations around the world, it also has pleasant weather and the lack of a holiday season rush on its side (think off season discounts and thin crowds). So, when the whole world comes back to work from the new year getaways, that’s the ideal time to pack your bags and head out. From Oman and Sri Lanka to Italy, the world welcomes you with open arms in the shortest yet most conducive month for travel. Here’s a list of places to visit in February.
It’s not every day that you get to see this pretty Italian city in its 13th century avatar. February is carnival time in Venice and the city dons a festive, medieval look making it one of the coolest places to visit in February. While it’s not the quietest or most peaceful and ‘sans tourists’ kind of time of the year to visit the floating city, it’s special and magical in its own way. You’ll spot people dressed in cloaks and masks, walking down the narrow alleys and posing by the canal or on plumed gondolas.
The masks have an interesting backstory. In 1608, the Council of the Ten issued a decree, forbidding any citizen to wear masks except during the Carnival and official banquets. To join in the revelry, you can rent a gown, a cloak and a mask if you like and head to the masquerade balls organized all over the city. The city is peppered with ateliers that provide both the clothes and the accessories. If you’re dressed right, you might find other tourists requesting you to pose with them for photographs too. The carnival lasts a month and features shows, balls, music and plays organized all over the city, attracting up to a million visitors a year, all competing to show off their magnificent and often very expensive costumes. The best way to experience the carnival is completely free. Most official events are gratis but the trick is to get there early to clear security and find a spot.
Top things to see and do: Attend a ball; buy a fancy cappuccino at the 18th-century Caffé Florian, a Venetian Carnival landmark; attend a Vivaldi concert by Interpreti Veneziani at Chiesa San Vidal; take a gondola ride in the canal; visit the Ca d’Oro palace on the Grand Canal, an art museum by the canal or check out the classic paintings and vibrant contemporary art scene at museums such as the Querini Stampalia and the Ca’ Rezzonico museum or art galleries that are spread across the city; catch an opera at the Venice Opera House.
How to get there: There are daily flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Venice. Currently 28 flights including Air India and Jet Airways ply between Delhi and Venice.
Where to stay: Hotel Bonvecchiati featuring its own water landing for gondolas and water taxis, a 5-minute walk away from Saint Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge or Pesaro Palace, a 15th-century building on the Grand Canal, next to the Ca' d'Oro water bus stop.
Good weather continues across Sri Lanka throughout February making it one of the most popular places to visit in February. The south and west coast bask in sunshine and clear skies with minimal rainfall throughout the month. While the pristine beaches of Negombo and Bentota beckon, the historic cities of Colombo and Kandy, the quiet hills of Nuwara Eliya, and the abundant wildlife at the Yala national parks are major draws too. Our pick however is the pretty, colonial town of Galle located down the coast. The charming, postcard perfect city exudes an old world charm and a slow sleepy pace, perfect to set the holiday mood right. An UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic city is a delight to explore on foot. It is home to the Galle Fort, the fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonialists in the 16th century, which takes you back in time. High points? - stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British styles. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful Galle Lighthouse.
Top things to see and do: Catch the sunset at Flag Rock, at the southernmost end of the Galle Fort, which was once a Portuguese bastion; buy super-stylish reproduction posters and postcards covering Sri Lanka through the decades at a store called Stick No Bills, visit the unique Meeran Mosque with its British Victorian architecture, Islamic detailing and a facade that is more reminiscent of a Portuguese cathedral than a mosque; pick up speciality Ceylon garden teas from a store called Withered Leaves; grab a meal at Minute by TukTuk, a café that offers one of the best views of the city.
How to get there: Bandaranaike International airport in Colombo is the only international airport in Sri Lanka. From there daily flights are available to and from Katunayake, about 155 kilometres away from Galle. Air traffic flying in and out of the Bandaranaike International airport includes carriers from India and other parts of Southeast Asia, Europe, Australia, Middle East and United States. Galle is connected to important cities like Bentota and Colombo with a good network of buses and the Coastal Railway Line, with Galle railway station being a major stop for trains running on the west and south coast of Sri Lanka.
Where to stay: Fort Square Boutique Villa, just 104m from Galle Fort or Amari Galle 12.9 km from Hikkaduwa, and 46.7 km away from Bentota
