Hoher Kasten - a nice knife-edge massif on top of which spectacular views of Appenzeller Alps is guaranteed: emerging Rhine from Graubünden, the smallest nation Leichtenstein, surrounded Sämtisersee lake, Mt. Säntis-Altmann peak, Lake Konstanz and the beautiful meadows of Appenzell - all in one place! It can be easily accessible from Konstanz or Zürich by reaching Appenzell and from there a red-coloured train (Appenzeller Bahn) takes passengers to Brülisau. This is the base station from which one can have a gondola ride to the summit station Hoher Kasten. The views were spectacular up in there - I watched a dragon to sniff (clouds covering a peak in a look-alike fashion), heavenly rays falling down in Eastern Switzerland. The Austrian Alpine massifs e.g. Mt. Zimba were nicely visible. The most beautiful were the eye-pleasing meadows of Appenzell. After spending an hour or two, I decided to go down by following the hiking trail. It's not at all difficult, however I took not-so-easy trail to challenge my journey a bit.
After descending to Ruhesitz, hike ends in simple walking through the beautiful grassy meadows of Appenzell. From there we took the train back to Konstanz via Appenzell. One can buy nice souvenirs at Appenzell, it's quite beautiful city to explore around summer. One can also take the train to Wasserrauen to visit Seealpsee, a heavenly lake along this region. Happy travelling.
