Each waterfall in Iceland is unique and stunning in its way. We have picked six lesser-known waterfalls that should be part of your Iceland travel bucket list.

1. Kvernufoss

A few meters away from the famous Skogafoss, this hidden gem is a must-visit waterfall in Iceland. The walk to Kvernufoss along the Kverná river is mesmerising. The waterfall is visible from the ring road at a certain angle but is behind the beautiful gorge. It is 40 meters high. You can also walk behind the waterfall. It is accessible from the main road, and after reaching parking, you can walk for 600m along the river to reach the stunning waterfall.

2. Öxarárfoss

This waterfall is within Þingvellir National Park in Southwest Iceland. You can easily explore the waterfall along with Golden Circle. The Þingvellir National Park is one of the three attractions of Golden Circle, and this waterfall is the main attraction of the National Park. The waterfall freezes during winters. The water falls from 13 meters into the base of huge rocks, creating a beautiful spot.

3. Gufufoss

You have to go offbeat to visit this waterfall. It is another hidden gem of Iceland. It is secluded, and you will find fewer people here. This 27-meter high waterfall in the East Fjords of Iceland is on the way down to the beautiful town of Seydisfjordur. There is a small parking place near the waterfall, and you can walk close to the waterfall from the parking place.

4. Selfoss

You can visit Selfoss while visiting the most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Dettifoss. It is part of the Diamond Circle of Iceland. Selfoss is around 600m walking distance from the Dettifoss. There is a marked trail to visit the waterfall from the parking, and you must follow the marked route.

5. Rjukandafoss

Rjukandafoss is the main waterfall in a series of the waterfall in Rjukandi. It is hard-to-miss waterfalls along the Ring Road in East Iceland between Mývatn and Egilsstaðir. There is a small parking spot in front of the waterfall, and you can walk close to the waterfall. This 139 meters waterfall is attention-grabbing, so make a pitstop here while going to Stuðlagil Canyon. There is a steep hiking trail which takes you close to the fall.

6. Gljufrafoss

The most spooky hidden waterfall in Iceland is Gljufrafoss. This waterfall is inside the cave. It is north of Seljalandsfoss in Iceland. To visit the waterfall, you can follow the trail to the left of the main waterfall and enter the narrow canyon where the water plummets to a small pool. This waterfall is smaller than the main waterfall and has fewer tourists but is equally stunning and different.

These are the lesser-known waterfalls and are less crowded with few tourists, so you can have the place for yourself and enjoy Icelandic nature. All these waterfalls come across the Ring Road of Iceland, and you can put these in your itinerary.
