Ooty - Solitude in the Queen of Hills

23rd Apr 2014
Day 1

8:00 to 11:00 - Botanical Garden is just a 10 mins walk from the Charring Cross. A stroll in the garden is a perfect way to start your day. The garden was first established in 1848 and is maintained by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. A perfectly landscaped garden will make you feel awestruck with its splendid beauty of colours. In short, the colours of Red, Yellow and Blue will mesmerize you.

12:00 to 15:00 - You have to visit the peak for the obvious reasons as it is the highest peak in the Nilgiris at 2,623 m around 10 kms from Ooty town. Spend some time on the peak and have a panoramic view of the the landscape. On your way back to Ooty you can always visit the Tea Factory and understand the process of making it. The factory has some interesting information on how tea penetrated in India.

16:00 to 18:00 - A leisurely evening to be spent at the Ooty Lake with paddle boats around.

Well, what comes to everyone's mind when we call of Hill Stations in South India? Munnar, Kodaikanal or probably more commercialized Ooty. As far as Ooty is concerned, it is the favourite weekend gateway for the people of Bengaluru, Mysore and Coimbatore. The places of interest in Ooty are Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake & Boat House, Doddabetta Peak, Pykara Waterfalls and Lake. The favourite summer hill station gets flooded with tourist from all over India during the months of April and May. Early April would be an ideal time to visit the Queen of the Hills.

My whole journey was carried out on a rented Motorcycle which are available from Ettines Road. However, one can always opt for Govt. buses or private tours.

7:00 to 10:00 - It will take some time to reach to the spot from the Ooty town. However, the shooting spot is perfectly refreshing place to begin your day. From the hill, make sure to catch a glimpse of the distant Nilgiri Range. Just imagine yourself hiking on a green meadows in the cool breeze.

11:00 to 13:00 - You can't imagine a hill station without having a waterfall. Pykara is another point of interest for the tourists in the Ooty region.

However, Ooty is more than just above places. There are some serene places which one would likely to miss out as they're not on a traditional tourist route. One can visit the nearby villages such as M.Palada and Ketti Palada to witness the beautiful homes in the hills.

15:00 to 18:00 - One of the most promising lakes situated in the region known as 'Silent Valley', around 25 kms from Ooty. On your way to the lake, you pass through the beautiful countryside of the region. Villages such as M.Palada will make you witness valleys and meadows that are coated in lush green colour. The best thing about Emerald lake is that it is not commercialized among the tourists. The place is secluded. Partial mountains can be seen playing hide and seek with the clouds. One could easily find tranquility and solitude in the nature.

Another day in Ooty would have covered places on the Coonoor Road which would include iconic train ride from Ooty to Coonoor.
