lleIf you are planning to visit Sri Lanka, YOU HAVE GOT TO VISIT Galle!
Galle is easily my favourite little town from my visit to Sri Lanka.
We hired scooters and rode into the town of Galle. We visited the lighthouse, Point Utrecht Bastion and walked around Galle Fort, a UNESCO heritage site. We spent all evening swimming in the Indian Ocean at Unawatuna Beach in the moonlight followed by another day of whale watching and relaxing in the town.
With panoramic views of the Indian ocean, quaint cafes and restaurants, boutiques and art galleries Galle truly is a great amalgamation of Asian and Dutch cultures.
WHERE TO STAY
We stayed at the lovely Nooit Gedatch Heritage Hotel at Unawatuna Beach. It’s a boutique hotel and the best hotel we stayed at during our visit to Sri Lanka. I suggest booking directly through the hotel for a good deal. The staff is extremely friendly and resourceful too. We paid about 60$ for a night inclusive of breakfast back in 2012. The deluxe rooms were about 75$ and they might be worth the upgrade.
WHERE TO EAT
Some of the best restaurants we ate at were Crepe-o-logy, Peddlar’s Inn cafe, Serendipity cafe, Kingfisher (at Unawatuna beach) and Wok on the wild side. The crepes at Crepe-o-logy, the dessert at Peddlar’s Inn Cafe, the lobsters at Serendipity cafe and the mind blowing views and seafood at Kingfisher come highly recommended!
SIDE TRIPS
Hikkaduwa can easily be reached via a tuk tuk and you can even choose to spend the night there. We spent two nights there and visited some lovely art galleries.
HOW TO REACH THERE
Sri Lankan airlines are very well connected to many cities across the globe. If you’re coming from India, Jet Airways, Mihin Lanka, Air India, Spice Jet and Sri Lankan airlines flies directly into Colombo. From there, there are many taxi’s available at the airport, a direct train that leaves in the morning for Galle from Colombo railway station and some buses too.
Come visit GALLE!
